I dislike the Red Sox because, for literally (frank)ing decades, they whined and complained that the Yankess always bought their championships. And I can respect that. Then, the Red Sox go out and buy a championship, and their fans get all defensive when other people tell them they bought a championship.
I can accept that fact that you felt you needed to mimic what the Yankess did to beat them, but you're a bunch of hypocrites. - jmatchett383
You realize in 2004 the Yankees payroll was 182 million, while the Red Sox was 125 million. How is that copying what the Yankees did? |

This is EXACTLY why I hate them. They try to differentiate themselves from that evil empire that is the Yankees, when in reality, they did what they called the yanks out for doing and say it's not the same. - Hextall271

Well they could buy themselves a guy who can get rid of some problem players whose cap hits don't equal their performance.

.. and the Jays were probably at 60 mil. Yanks and Sox were both in the realm of teams buying a championship in comparison to most teams. The fact they were trying to come off as being like Oakland is a farce. |

If it is as simple as spending money where are the Flyers Cups from when there was no cap? They outspent a large majority of the NHL routinely. What is there to show for it? |

Word is Schenn will be healthy scratched for the home opener, with VdV back to the 1LW spot he sometimes played under Berube. |

Call me crazy, but I prefer the lineup with VDV in for Schenn and Gudas out for all of the Three Stooges. I would keep it this way until January and then reacess. |

I'm happy that these guys are all finding homes in front offices, but damn... is it really necessary to shut these sites down after people get hired?

People should be rooting like hell for MacDonald to play great. The better him and Read play the better they look as possible trade chips.
Also the better they help the Flyers win games.
I think MacDonald has been good so far. I think Schultz has been the weakest defender these first 2 games. - J35Bacher
The contract is always going to be an issue with MacDonald. In order for them to trade him at some point, with retained salary likely, he has to be playing in the NHL and playing well. I agree, it's a good thing that MacDonald has played well. |

They were #1 and #2 in team payroll that year, and the distance between #2 and #3 was pretty large. Sure, they didn't match the payroll of the Yankees, but they still bought a championship. |

I would love it, and I would freely admit that my team was willing to spend money to win. It's not so much that they spent the money, more that they tried to differentiate them buying a championship from the evil empire Yankees buying theirs.
FWIW, I was a Yankees fan from 1996-2001 because of family ties to Tino Martinez. |

They had to spend all that money to compete with all of the other big market teams that won Cups like New Jersey, Tampa Bay, Colorado, and Dallas. That's why they instituted the salary cap, right? So that small market teams like New York, Toronto, and the Flyers could remain competitive. |

Yes, but the mystique behind Oakland was that they were run on a shoe string budget and had to be competitive. Boston used the same methods, but just outbid everybody to get who they wanted. |

They really aren't going to have as much room as people think unless they let MDZ walk or trade one of the top 6 forwards. - PhillySportsGuy
They're looking at 22M of cap space as of now, with out any increase in cap space. Have to believe that one of the young defenseman is going to make the jump to the team. Really the only contracts that might see a significant increase is Del Zotto , Gostisbehere, and whatever they decide to do with the goaltending. They could be looking at a decent chunk of money to dip into free agency, if they choose to. |
