Sorry but I don't trust eggheads who don't watch the games anymore than I trust medical doctors who don't watch Grey's Anatomy. It's why I get my hockey analysis from the philly.com comments section and my surgeries from a midwife.

If you, me, and Tomahawk managed a hockey team, I really think we could be the second coming of the Benning-Sweeney-Chiarelli Triumvirate. We would just have to decide who is who.

I honestly don't even think being a GM is that hard

I excel at it on Superstar in NHL 17. I even run the budgets and promo, it's cake.

I acknowledge the difficult on-the-job training aspects like building a rapport with other GMs, agents, your coaching and scouting staff, etc. when it comes to negotiating and contracts and drafting and team building and the like. There is a lot to handle on a daily basis with inter and intra stuff going on.

But no, I don't see why an intelligent person or group of people (well, I'm out of luck) with strong hockey knowledge couldn't work their way up as they would in any other high profile job. If you're intelligent enough to earn an MBA and work on Wall Street or a PhD in Puppetry and work on Sesame Street, you have the innate ability to manage a hockey team. It's just very much a country club in the NHL where select membership is given to "hockey people." We're seeing some cracks in that way of things as of late, but it's still mostly true.

I think things will begin to change with the infusion of non-hockey people. Once analytics begin to actually play a major role, teams will realize it's smarter to hire a brilliant person and teach him/her hockey rather than hire an old hockey player and teach him accounting/analytics.

That's backwards. What's smarter is to hire a smart hockey guy, who is willing to incorporate all methods of player evaluations, and team building. A guy who is willing to invest in and use analytics, but analytics can't be, and shouldn't be the main tool. It is equally wrong to ignore analytics, as it is to rely on them completely.

But really, if a brilliant person is exploring hockey management, odds are he is a huge hockey nerd anyway

I literally just realized that Matt Duchene is Mike Wheeler from Stranger Things grown up

Matt Duchene just got (frank)ing rocked and did a complete flip on a hip check. Didn't stick the landing, but he's no Simone Biles after all.

Can I be the aging alcoholic scout who rants and raves in meetings but who they keep around because he knows loads of funny stories and once played for Eddie Shore?
