How they looked in practice this week is probably part of it. We don't see any of that, but the coach does.

Just by looking at the gif and not actual video it doesn't look like a cheap shot by Malkin. It looks like Holtby had just covered the puck with his glove about the same time Malkin tries to poke it free.
