Could very well be, going shoulder first like that could just pop the collarbone. That would be the worst possible thing. They never heal right. Mine still pops and grinds and hurts and if I move a certain way it hurts like hell.

The play that Kane got hurt on is very similar to the one that broke McDavid's collerbone last year and kept Seguin out of the world cup of hockey. Lots of speed down the wing and a stick gets tangled up in the feet of the attacker.
