I fully appreciate how good Tatar is, but also understand he's a RFA after this year and is already making 2.75 mil. I would expect him to be 5+ a year on his next deal.
I wouldn't not do it because he isn't worth a 1st, I wouldn't do it because we have to pay or replace Dumo, Murray, Bones, Daley, Kunitz, Hornqvist and the slew of bottom 6 forwards that are playing up and down the lineup in the next two years. Those bottom 6 guys won't get huge raises, but some of them are going to be making around 2 mil a year. Our forwards are stacked already, I don't think we need to invest in another high priced forward. We need to start keeping some first round picks. - mw630
Exactly.. take Kunitz's money and Scuderi's money and give it to Tatar. I'm going to go with a proven stud NHL player over a crapshoot late first round pick 10 times out of 10 if that deal is on the table. You do not pass up on a deal like that, ever. You make the money work, because thats how good he is. I'm not for the sake of keeping a 1st round pick just to have it, not if you have a sure fire, bonafide top line NHL player. That's just nonsense.

Sestito is awesome. How does anyone consider Hedman ahead of Letang? Hedman islike a smooth skating slightly above average d man. I hope Sestito punches him in the face. |

He continues to prove he has zero hockey IQ. He probably prefers DP over Hedman.

Ottawa's D continues to suck. Karlsson embarrassingly bad on that second goal. He truly isn't that good at defense. |

Yeah he has a Hatty now... Sens look like a mess.
Before I finished writing this he has 4 goals now.. That's pretty nuts... |

They had the worst defense by far last year of any team as far as giving up shots and quality chances. They didn't do anything to help the cause in the off season. Karlsson, Ceci, Methot, Phaneuf, Wideman, Borowecki ... that isn't going to get it done. |

Problem is Dumoulin will likely eat up most of that money. To give Tatar that, they'd either have to move some serious salary or replace guys like Bonino and Daley with cheap options they don't have internally. |

I don't think that trade is possible for the reasons you suggest. That said, if the cap wasn't a problem, its a deal Pittsburgh would consider.

It can be done. Replace bonino with guentzel if he lives up to expectations. Cullen will probably be gone. Dupuis money comes off the books, trade fleury, recycle the 3rd/4th line with more ahl players so they don't have to pay guys like Kuhnhackl, rust, etc. With new ahl guys. If that deal was every on the table... you take it and work around it. Granted it will never be on the table... but if it was, you make it work. He's that good. |

You can make it work, sure. And if that deal was actually there, take it and worry about it next year. But if the GM is saying he's a wing at this level, Guentzel isn't going to replace Bonino. Dupuis money doesn't help, they're already not using it against the cap. Best route would probably be dump someone like Hornqvist or Hagelin after the season.
If Bonino or Daley leave, they need replaced because we don't seem to have any top 4 defensemen or scoring line center lying around. Those would be bigger holes then we have at wing. |

Really I just wanted to say it's way more complicated to add a 5M wing than you stated. And in reality, it would cost a key piece or two that would need to be replaced.
Pens have a formula that works and the prospects, cheap players, and salary structure to keep it in place for the next few years and possibly improve on it. |

I have a feeling that unless someone steps up majorly that we aren't foreseeing, we won't have a choice but resign Dailey. A lot depends on if we can find a taker for Fleury as far as a deal. If we can, we lose probably Hagelin or Hornie, which is another few million off the books. |

I agree with you. A Daley extension has bad ending written all over it, but that's a spot that needs filled and right side defensemen are always in demand. Unless Schultz or Pouliot makes a big jump, it's pay Daley or gamble in free agency and I don't really like either option. Guess I'd pay Daley because the Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Letang window has an expiration date. But we'll see what happens. |

I'd be more inclined to pay a guy like Daley because he can still skate very well. Even if that diminishes he'll still be a little above average. That's what worried me about trying to extend Paul Mart.
That being said, I'd try to get him for 2 years at the most. |

If our young guys step up Daley is a no brainer. Guys good. Doubt he'll take small term though which is a bummer because hopefully Prowe & Benggers will come through the ranks swiftly & quietly. |

If Hedmans considered world class Kirs Letang Brent Burns and Drew Doughty might as well have super powers. |

What did everyone think about the McDavid Penalty shot??? About the weakest penalty I have ever seen. It's really sickening thinking about what Crosby has to put up with, and McD gets this garbage. |

Very very curious to see how the Kings respond with Quick's pending absence for a while. The West is very tight. I'm pretty sure they don't survive with Zatkoff between the pipes for an extended period. I don't know who long Gaborik is going to be out as well as Quick, but they might have some decent LTIR $$$ to use. Do they try to deal for Bishop? It's not like they have to worry about losing him or Quick in the expansion draft because Bishop is a UFA after this year. TB can turn to Vasy and then the Latvian as his backup. That kid is good too. I would assume another move is coming for the Kings once its revealed how long Quick is out. |
