For the record, I think calling AMac a top 4 defender is like calling Raffl a 1st line winger. Just because they play there doesn't make them good at it.
- YuenglingJagr

When a defenseman plays a top 4 role for the majority of his career, and over multiple NHL seasons, that makes him a top 4 defenseman. You may not think he is the ideal player in that spot, but the facts show that he is.

This isn't really directed at anyone here, but I shake my head at how many fans believe that any D-man from the Phantoms would be an upgrade over AMac. As if guys who have never taken a shift against a legit NHL roster would somehow play like an all-star by comparison.

To me, AMac is Matt Carle lite. Same deficiencies but more pronounced, same skill set but to a lesser degree. With Gudas and MDZ out for the next little while, however, I'm actually glad we have a guy who can eat 20 minutes a night if necessary. I don't love having him on the team, but look at some of the other NHL rosters, like Edmonton and Toronto for example. AMac would be an upgrade over anyone from D3 down (yeah, I know, those aren't playoff teams. Blah blah).

Popular players always get a longer leash from fans, of course. There was a goal scored against the Flyers this preseason that happened because Ghost phoned in his coverage and was headed the wrong way when the opposing player got behind him. The instant narrative: it was AMac's fault for allowing the puck to enter the zone in the first place.

I would jump for joy of Hexy unloaded that contract, but since that's unlikely to happen any time soon...

- ChoclitLeClair

Lots of good points made here. Personally, I support MacDonald and think he is a better play than given credit for, but he's not as good as Matt Carle was, and I know that you're not saying that he is. I wish he was, but he's not. He doesn't have the offensive game that Carle had when he was here.

If a player plays in the NHL on the bottom line/pair of the team with the worst depth, he's technically an NHL player, even if he doesn't have the skill set to be an NHL player on the vast majority of teams.

There are different levels of good in the NHL. MacDonald is quite capable of playing on the 2nd pair, and providing reliable minutes.

I am also capable of putting on ice skates and skating with equipment and a stick for 20 minutes a night. That doesn't mean I've good at it.

I'm not saying that you're necessarily wrong, simply that playing on the 2nd pair doesn't mean that you are necessarily a good option to be doing so.

I think they'd rather have Laughton playing top minutes in the AHL than sitting in the press box. Also, they're likely to carry a 14th forward (VDV).

I just found this sort of funny from TSN:

Buffalo Sabres star Jack Eichel appeared to suffer an injury in practice on Wednesday. The team has not made an official announcement, but it appeared to be a lower-body injury. Several media members witnessed the secne, and reported Eichel screamed in pain as he fell to the ice.

Ya think???

When you've been that for something like 5 NHL seasons, it shows that you're a pretty good option for that. There certainly can be a upgrade and better options, but MacDonald has shown over his career that he can play a 2nd pair role on the NHL.

Rinaldo was a 4th line, low minute player his entire career. The next step from there, is out of the league. Poor rebuttal.
