like warsofsky? give me a break. pouliot sucks but noone else outdid pouliot enough at defense pos except the people that are already engrained in the nhl roster. I agree that he doesn't really deserv to be on the nhl roster. but he was the best option. who knows honestly he could be sent down before season starts

There's not a huge jump between Warsofsky and Derek Pouliot right now in terms of NHL effectiveness, so we should carry the guy who's a finished product and has no more ceiling to sit in the pressbox instead of the guy who can still develop into something. It was a bad move.

So Yak only ended up costing a grade B prospect and a 3rd round pick after all... I wouldn't of had a prob with the Pens spending that to take a chance on such a talent and young talent at that. He's a very fast skating sniper... The rest of his game and maturity could of been developed.

Wouldn't have worked under the cap. I would have loved to take a flyer on Yakupov, but I'm not gonna move mountains cap wise to facilitate it.

2.5 mill cap hit ain't bad. Not really mountains to move, thats basically Eric Fehr or Cole.... Or less than half of Fleury. For the record I like all of three of those players and I am happy to keep them.

Orpik, brown and Clarkson to name a few are wayyyy more overpaid than toews. He's overpaid, but still a very good player. The others are hot piles of garbage.
- mw630

All are overpayed, but nobody considers them good players, at least in my mind, so I don't consider them over-rated. But Toews was being compared to the GOAT last year, Super Mario...give me a break.

100% agree here Vic. Unless there's something the organisation has in mind, play Pouliot in the A to get his confidence. He's been with the big club enough to have had the 'higher performance' training, he needs to get his confidence. Maybe that we will see Shuliot play - only they will be not playing together, 1 in the presser the other on ice!

EDM is hilarious. This off season they moved 2 1st overall picks for Larsson, a crappy prospect and picks.......hilarious.

I never thought much of Nail, but if the Pens had the space I would have been fine moving him....hell DP could have landed Nail.

Toews and Lundquist are the most overpaid/rated in the league. I dont think Toews has ever put up more than70 pts, plays on the best team in the league and doesn't stick out much on it. I really dont see what the big deal is.

the "king" obviously needs a good D in front of him to be a good G. He did a better MAF impression than MAF can last playoffs. He made SHeary look like P Kane. He's good, but he still needs a good team in front of him. Throw in his cap hit, Id never put him on a team.

I'm thinking the Pens were trying to "sneak" Warsofsky through waivers. Pens official website didn't even release an offical statement on his release. (Like they did with every other cut down). If Warsofsky doesn't get claimed(which we'll find out in next 30 minutes) I fully expect Warsofsky to be 7D and Pouliot to be sent down for the opener. Not to mention the cap gymnastics the Pens will be playing to be cap compliant by Tuesday. Could be a few odd moves between now and then.

Caps D is fine, on paper. Niskanen, Carlson, Schmidt, Orlov...then Alzner and Orpik.

Carlson needs to step up big time, but the other 3 are just fine. Alzner and Orpik are what they are.

- Blackstrom2

I was surprised by how bad the Caps depth defensemen looked against the Pens. Maybe it's just a bad style match up, but that's still a problem because these teams appear on a collision course again. I think they were sheltered by the Caps forwards dominating most teams and got exposed. Need to get at least a strong #5 type.

I'd be surprised if Warsofsky get's claimed. He's a known quantity and was available on the open market in the summer. This time of year other teams have a bunch of their own "tweaners" they want to keep and the NHL rosters are full.

You're probably right about Pouliot getting sent down before opening day.

Right. DP was always going to be on the opening day roster because he has the highest cap hit and they'll want to maximize their LTIR space. To do that, they have to try and sneak Warsofsky through waivers. So I wouldn't guarantee DP has a spot until the Pens say he does or their first game.

I'd also expect Guentzel and DiPauli on the roster instead of Wilson and then for that to flip for cap shenanigans. That would put them right were they need to be to use Dupuis's full space. Then flip Guentzel, DiPauli, and IMO Pouliot for Wilson and Warsofsky if he's unclaimed and voila, 1.14M cap space.

I think people are jumping the gun on Warsofsky being wavered and Pouliot making the roster as the 7th D. Once a player clears waivers he becomes exempt for 30 days so this may have been nothing more than a paper move where the Pens saw a busy waiver wire day so they tried to squeeze Warsofky and Porter through to buy themselves some wiggle room, neither are required to report to WBS just because they were waived and to my understanding neither have to this point. They did a similar move with Andrew Ebbert a few years back and he ultimately started the season as the 13th forward. There are a lot of paper moves by teams this time of year to get rosters size & cap compliant so I wouldn't look to much into anything until they officially announce their roster.

PS. I would expect Sestito to be waiver in a similar paper move tomorrow or the next day.

Hopefully nothing serious with Crosby.

Otherwise looks like Wilson in Rust's spot. Dumo stays with Letang while Maatta is with Daley. Everything else is same as it ended.

Crosby is already in mid-season form. Hopefully they're just sitting him for a meaningless game with a bunch of cheap shot artists.

I wish an errant puck would hit that fuk face Torts right in the mug.

I'm not usually one for making predictions but I'm going to this one time, Kris Letang plays 75+ games this season and wins the 2016-2017 Norris Trophy!

Wilson looks like he can have a good career as a 3rd wheel on a scoring who does the dirty work and has just enough skill to get his share of greasy goals. Kind of like Dupuis.

This game is the polar opposite of how the Pens finished the season lol. Nobody is skating. They better get used to teams "upping" their game to beat the champs.

Pens look pathetic this game. Where is the speed they played with in the playoffs, where is the swarming defense and relentless forecheck? Letang looks good thats about it.

The Pens' 3 stars of today's game:

1. Scott Wilson
2. nobody
