I'm speaking in the sense that, if your GM asks you to waive, it's a sign that they believe this move they're making, which includes trading you, will make the team better. So in that sense, they don't want you.

But it's all hypothetical.

- RAGSareDANGERus

the biggest hypothetical is somebody actually being interested in acquiring Marc Staal when he has 5 more years on his contract at 5.7 million a year.

The contract is itself a no trade clause because its so bad

The only way Staal or G is gone is a buyout at the end of the season. Pick your poison because 1 of them is here to stay.

If we are talking about making the defense better realistically, its not involving either of them in a trade.

Which is why the hypothetical proposal is Miller + Staal for future considerations AKA nothing

so we are pretending we don't know about Marc Staal's NMC and just going with that theory?
- jimbro83

I know he negotiated that in his contract for a reason but its not like the Rangers are the only team he would ever want to play for

I think the problem is more that a team would have to take him on and be stuck with him (unless he waived the NMC). a team would have to protect him if he keeps his NMC and packaged with Miller you're saying a team would have to take on both of those guys less than a year before the expansion draft and take on their salary

It is about as impossible as trading Vincent Lecaval-oh wait

If both teams could get guys to waive NMCs, CBJ and NYR could actually help each other out of a jam

What about eating 50% of the deal, not including Miller but someone else like Lindberg

"So, this is what I'm gonna do for you. The offer I was just giving you for a stale turd and a brand new iPhone 7? Watch this. Now I'm going to give you a refurbed iPhone 5S, but I'm going to knock 50% off the stale turd. My manager is gonna kill me, but I don't care"

that would be fantastic...still requires a team to protect him in expansion unless they get him to axe the NMC

Ok what do we have here, oh, you're going to love this folks. Here is a one eyed defenseman on a long term contract. Now normally someone with the name Staal would fetch a pretty good return, but watch what I'm going to do here folks. I'm now offering Staal, and his good eye, for just one ham sandwich. Don't have the sammich now? Now problem we will break this down into 3 payments of equal thirds of sandwiches.

I had the unfortunate displeasure of going car (compacy SUV, if you want to be a d!ck about it) shopping with my GF over the summer. One guy at Ford literally tried this and thought that, apparently, we both had suffered severe brain trauma not long before we walked into that dealership. I don't remember the numbers so I'm just making them up.

Him: Well we can do 5 year financing and it comes out to $383/mo

Her: That's a little more than I was hoping to be paying

Him: Ok, let me go talk to my manager, hold on

(5 minutes goes by)

Him: Ok, so I got him to come down to 7 years, $273/mo

Me, finally: All you did was add two years to the financing to lower the monthly payment. It's literally the exact same price.
