I think if the expansion draft wasn't this year, Pedan wouldn't be sent down, it's because of the draft rules that to be able to be compliant you need to expose a defenseman that's played a certain number of NHL games. Since we have to protect Guddy, Edler and Tanev and Hutton/Stecher/Pedan/Tryamkin are exempt, we need to expose a few D which will be Biega and Sbisa, the problem is that Biega hasn't played enough games so this is how they're going to get around that problem. Pedan's the first call-up for sure.

I understand but don't agree. sign Bartowski for Utica and expose him. Or sign another fringe dman that is released from another team. Biega has no business suiting up for the Canucks.

Pedan is not exempt. He has over 3 years Pro experience between NHL and AHL games. He just doesn't have enough NHL games to be the minimum 1 defenseman exposed.

The only thing I can imagine is that they want Pedan to keep playing and hope to squeak him through, but Biega obsession is ridiculous. The guy is 28 years old, give Pedan the NHL experience

EDIT: The expansion draft theory makes some sense, but I dont entirely buy it since the team is trying to be competitive

So maybe I am reading the rules wrong but Sbisa already meets that requirement no?

All Clubs must meet the following minimum requirements regarding players exposed for selection in the Expansion Draft:
One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.

Sbisa played 41 games last year, unless the rules are referring to "prior season" as 2016-17, in which case Sbisa needs to dress for 29 more games. I would rather Sbisa dress for 29 games than have Biega for 18...

I wonder if he could have been demoted but stayed with the Canucks just so they could reach the 23 player roster? Tryamkin wouldn't be dressing for games but would be practicing with the team for 15-20 games and JB would have seen an injury in the lineup, Stecher come back to earth and/or just given JB time to assess the lineup and time to trade a dman?

then again maybe Tryamkin doesn't want to take the pay cut. it would almost be better for the Canucks if he went back to the KHL for 1 season until it gets a bit more sorted here and he gains a bit more experience.

I am just worried Toronto will claim him...If he clears then it's all good. I mean, they claimed little Franky and he is brutal. Jazz cigerattes make me drousy...perhaps a few early pints while watching the Jays
