Without looking, I'm guessing his Corsi relative to team isn't great. amirite? - prock
Josi is a top 5 Dman in the NHL. I would take him over Gio and Hamilton, and maybe even Brodie, for Calgary. And those are some damn good dmen. Mediocre

Are you sure about that? I'm not actually saying you're wrong, but the rules were very vaguely described in the NHL writeup. All they said was all first and second year pros do not need protecting. It's my understanding Euro leagues are included as pro. Would McDavid, who has two years, be considered third year, given that he is going into his third year?
I'd like to see, from a reliable source, it broken down clearly. - prock
McDavid is entering his 2nd year. The expansion draft would be held before July 1st making it happen during his 2nd year so he does not need to be protected. According to https://www.nhl.com/news/...n-draft-rules/c-281010592 teams can protect either 7fw, 3d, &1g, or 8 skaters of any position and 1g.

Top 5????
No, you're being silly via the other end of the spectrum. He's no way, no how, top 5.
Doughty, Keith, OEL, Hedman, Vlasic was this year, Letang, all better. If Giordano stays healthy, he might be. No way is Josi better than any of those guys.

Show me where that is clearly articulated by the NHL. I haven't seen it fully explained anywhere. There are a few things that are open to interpretation there.

I can see it now... Thinking that McDavid is automatically protected, the Oilers management do not include him on their list, and Vegas takes him

"All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits)."
"The 30 NHL Clubs must submit their Protection List by 5:00 P.M. ET on Saturday, June 17, 2017. The Las Vegas team must submit their Expansion Draft Selections by 5:00 P.M. ET on June 20 and the announcement of their selections will be released on made on June 21. "
The NHL calendar year begins July 1st, hence free agenct frenzy then. Tho I cannot find a link making that official. But it is common sense. Therefore Connor McDavid will be a 2nd year player and automatically protected.

I'm sure they need to list 1st and 2nd year players that they consider protected. And if found ineligible they'd be corrected or penalized for submitting a incorrect list.
On that note, keeping Drai up for 36 games and burning the first year off his contract comes back to burn MacT. One more moronic move showing its face.

Yes. I've read this. What constitutes a pro season? One game? Are you positive someone going into their third year is only a second year? Just because the date is two weeks before?
The CBA is so clearly articulated. Why are they so vague with this?

It's a conspiracy... They want Vegas to win the cup in their very first year.

11 games played is considered a year burned off their rookie contract. That's why teams send down players after 10 games every year. To save that year on their rookie contract. The NHL calendar resets on July 1st. It's in the players contracts. Why would the league change things just to give a new team an advantage?

That's specific to the slide rule. And they're clearly not using this rule - because it also says AHL play is not included in "professional service" in that case, and it's my understanding that the expansion rules count AHL play as a year.

are people really going to start looking to that tournament as proof of how good a player is? You must be out to lunch. - prock
I watched about 6 minutes of it between the baseball post season race and the NFL season on the go. A preseason Allstar tourney doesn't get my attention. But anyone who made their teams respected roster deserves respect as an above average talent.

yeah, he is. But above average, to top 5 in the NHL, is a bit of stretch.
