I think Warsofsky will probably take the 7th spot while DP plays in the AHL. - madmike71
Me too. Judging by practice today, that's the battle. In the split practices, the first group had all the guys who have the team made plus Wilson, Sundqvist, Sestito, Warsofsky, Pouliot, and Jarry. So those are the guys I'd guess are ahead right now.
A little surprised Guentzel wasn't there, but guess there's little chance to force his way on no matter how impressive. Also thought Porter might be in the mix for bench guy as Wilson falls in that category for me of too promising to sit in the pressbox, same with Sundqvist. Wilson was working with Malkin and Hornqvist though so they have to at least be considering him either puahing someone else to the bench or else somebody like Rust won't be ready to start the year. |

BB with 2 - yes I repeat 2 goals without injury in the 1 game!!
Just a side note - Dinger gets his 3rd assist.

Are you just trying to jinx him? - Rinosaur
No just pointing out he hasn't hit his season form yet!

I remember Pouliot in his first camp. He was far better than he looked last night. He has played some decent games in the NHL. Unfortunately, he appears to be regressing. I'm starting to think he'll be back in WB and on the trade block. I'm not a fan of WarSOFsky, but It wouldn't surprise me if he's taken the 7th slot. - madmike71
Warsofsky might not fire anyone up at all. There would be a problem is he was #6. However, at this stage, I trust him at #7 over DP. |

Warsofsky is a finished product. It won't hurt him sitting in the press box. DP might ultimately prove he's not an NHL talent, but I still want him playing hockey in the AHL and not watching hockey in the NHL. |

I keep running into Canadians at the bars over here in Bologna. Never thought I'd be able to get into spontaneous hockey arguments in Italy, yet here I am. Is it October yet? |

I see a six way tie for the #7 spot. With whoever is playing the best hockey in WBS being the call up.
Then the question becomes can one or more of these guys play sheltered minutes? Also depending on who gets injured can the remaining five of the top six fill in that spot and take on the added minutes.
Personally I think they can, at least I am optimistic. I think the group they have assembled, although not outstanding, are talented and driven. Plus the forward crew is solid enough to help if the injury bug hits hard.
Short off season notwithstanding, let's drop the puck. |

number 7 guy is warsofsky or olesky... someone who can go on road trips and sit in the box... for all the lack of what DP has shown so far he needs to play top minutes in WBS... either for us or to showcase talents to make him a trade chip at deadline.

Like I said I like the work he's put in this offseason, but it's time for him to sink or swim. Send him back to WBS. Give him every opportunity to dominate AHL level caliber opposition on Prow or Bengtsson's right. If he still can't do that then it's time to move on. No need to count a mil against the cap next season when he's no longer waiver exempt when we can get a guy like Warsofsky to be our #7 for near vet minimum.

in a parrellel universe lots of players are pens. mario was high on the kid and he still might pan out. Its a damn good position to be in that the main concerns are the back up goalie (temporarily) and the number 7 defenseman, and who beats out whom for the few spots on the top 13. good days. |

Indeed, but I'm still going to not pick the few problems we still have. |

Don't be surprised if the Pens only carry six D to start. No road trips to speak of before November 2nd. |

maybe... but with so much competition for wbs spots they may want a vet 7 up here to allow wbs to do its own thing. |

And that is the problem. You have said there are six #7s on the roster now. One of those includes a former prized pick the Penguins specifically moved up to get in the Jordan Staal deal. That tell you and everyone something as to where he sits now, despite all this supposed talent. |

I don't see it as a problem. Three of the top four are here for a long time (Letang, Maatta and Dumoulin). Schultz will have this year to be the guy to step up into the four spot. Prow, Pouloiott, Taylor and Bengtsson have time to develop. These guys don't have to replace Letang, they have to replace Cole, Daley and Lovejoy. |

They're probably going to be healthy scrstching guys in WBS that have gotten some NHL experience. I wonder if all these guys signed here July 1st thinking there was little competition for call up jobs and then looked around and saw Rutherford might have gone overboard and swore at their luck. |

Just to further that, if Warsofsky is #7 then WBS has something like:
Pouliot-Olesky
Gaunce - Bengtsson
Percy- Prow
Scratches: Erixon, Ruhwedel, McNeil
That's a nice group for an AHL team. |

I'm thinking Wilson pushes out Sheary sometime before midseason. Also, I have complete faith in Jarry. |

Agree about Wilson. I think he may actually be the best goal scorer of the WB guys. |

I hope Bengtsson or Prow can claim that 1RD spot from Olesky. Olesky isn't good and has no upside. |

I have no idea how the pairings will shake out, but I don't think they would put a rookie with Pouliot right away if he's making all these bad turnovers. Olesky seems to have some trust from coaches, but since most of the guys on the depth chart are new who knows how it will look. |
