Was at my annual live hockey draft with a bunch of friends so admittedly all I could do for this one was go through the highlights and numbers.

Hah It happens. From the little I saw, it was a hard game to watch anyway. Lots of lulls then a suprise goal here and there.

I think the Blues effed up on this one.

They paid Tarasenko too much and Gaudreau's agent is using him as a direct comparison. If you conveniently ignore that Tarasenko was a depth player for a great Blues team, Gaudreau had better numbers in the first two seasons.

- Hunkulese

Wait, what? He got paid after putting up 73 in 77, so if he did that as a "depth guy", I think he is the single most valuable depth player in the NHL.

Not disagreeing that Gaudreau was not better in his first 2 seasons, but c'money, this guy got paid because once given the opportunity, he ran with it and ran over the NHL. Even in Hitchcocks trap system...

$7.5 as a max in my opinion. Term will play a significant role in the fav as well. I agree, though. Goo is the captain and the straw that stirs the drink but Johnny is the booze that makes the drink in a lot of ways and the Flames are going to have to abandon plan A and give hime at least $7mil. I wonder if the Flames promised Gio he would be the highest paid Flame for a # of years and don't want to welch on that promise?
- TandA4Flames

Hmm that makes sense also. You wouldn’t wanna piss off Gio if that indeed was what the Flames had negotiated. Seems weird the way this is going and the tweets Bob MacKenzie is sending out there is no end in sight. Both sides are not even talking. Mexican stand off with your best player 2 weeks before the season doesn’t bode well for anyone besides the other 6 teams in the Pacific division. Get it done Burke or Trelving!! How ever the F you spell it!

If you're the agent, you say look at Tarasenko's 62 in 102 from his first two seasons,
now look at Gaudreau's 142 in 159. Tarasenko has also yet to reach 78 points. Why would he not demand more than what Tarasenko got?

I dunno maybe play less than 100% which in the NHL means leak goals like the Oilers have in the last decade?

You really don't know Gio? Not that type of person, hence the C on the jersey.

Yeah, a lot of his goals last year were when the other team had a lead and he was trying to get us back into it. He doesn't check out when the losing starts like several notable Oilers..

Sure, you could position it that way, but JG walked into a 1st line role, Tarasenko had to earn his place on the top unit, so his pts/game for the first couple of years were naturally going to be lower.

Tarasenko, the year he got paid put 73 points in 77 games, or .948 pts/game. Johnny, last season, put up 78 in 80 or.975 pts/game.

Tarasenko is not overpaid, the only reason you could come close to making that argument is that he paid at a very young age. He scored 40 last year, he was 12th in league scoring and guys ahead of him all earn as much or more. If I am the Blues, I consider that deal to be fair given that he is only getting better as time goes on and is already approaching top 10 in points and was 4th in goals scored last year.

Gaudreau is an elite player, and I am not making an argument not to pay the guy, personally, I would hand over the 7.5-8MM for 8 years and walk away ecstatic to know that he's locked in for nearly a decade

Giving that term to a Russian scorer who bickers with his coach about ice time might get ugly in the the later years..

Oh well. Iggy held out, Fleury held out. Seems like a right of passage.

2 years, no major injuries

McDavid took what 20 games to crash into the boards head first? skating to the net at 100 miles an hour every time you get the puck is great, until you get the slightest of contact

In my opinion. I think Jonny Hockey would go insane if he sat out any time during the season. You can see it doesn't matter what team he is playing for he has a drive to win that would eat him up in side if he couldn't play.

I think he deserves $6.5-7.0 over 5 years or $7.0 - 8.0 if he signs anything over a 5 year contract.
