For those of you who are expecting to see dynamic play like you get from Ghost (rerovy) stop now. You are not gonna see it. However, what you might see is the same sort of stuff you get from Drew Doughty. He isnt out there spinning circles, dipsy-doodling, and slammin home rockets from the point, but he absolutely makes the right play 95% of the time. He is dominant in all three zones, and makes his team that much better. Provy might have a rush from time to time where you go "Whoa, this kid is special", but its the mundane dirty stuff that makes him so special. Simple plays like moving the puck up ice calm and collectively when another guy would be forced into a turnover. Or like last night, chipping the puck high off the glass and spinning out of a big hit attempt and getting up out of the zone before the checker. He is machine like, in the best way possible.

I said to my friend last night at the game during a stopage after a Provorov shift. He doesn't make it look hard. Everything just seemed to slow when he got the puck and he'd make a pass and the Flyers went easily into offensive mode. Hate bringing up the names but Timonen and Desjardins would do that and you'd be relaxed the whole time they were on the ice,

Abysmal may have been a too strong choice of the word, but there was a reason for not making team right out of the gate.
- missingmike

Well, yes. However, he and Hagg were the last 2 defenders cut before AMac was assigned. There's a wide gap between "abysmal" and "not quite ready."

To be fair my post was a response to this:

Completely agree. Shame about Provorov...focused a lot on watching him throughout the game and he definitely doesn't have that "wow" factor that Ghost has. I realized he's only played 2 preseason games, but knowing that Hexy is leaning towards sending him back to junior, he's going to have to do more.

Hockeylover, from Mt. Airy you're on 94 WIP. Hey Jody, I watched the Flyers game last night. Against the Isles B squad they only won 4-0. They should have scored more goals I tink.

Also, Moron has not fought anyone yet. Guys a bum. I'll hang up and listen for your thoughts. Tanks. Great show by the way.

end call....

I agree 100% with this. Hextall has stated that, in order for a junior-aged player to earn a spot, he's going to have to be blown away by him. He can't just be as good or better than a vet, he has to show that he's ready to be a full-time producer at the NHL level. Provorov has played really well, and while he's not a highlight reel type of player like Ghost, he hasn't done anything exceptionally well to jump out at you, and that's what it will take. Right now, were I a betting man, I'd say he does not make the team.

Hey hockeylover, you know, Flyers hockey and all. It was nice to see Simmonds score goals, but why's he wearing a visor like some soft Russian? Seems like he's afraid to fight anyone. I don't know what Shawn Morlon's problem is, the guy was supposed to be a guy who hits and fights people, it seems like the Flyers really missed on that one.

A few observations I took from last night. Wayne Simmonds remains awesome and a steady leader for this group. Schenn looks like an NHL regular and a top six guy for this group. Steve Mason though, he's always trended towards better than just good. My bold statement on him is that he has a career season. He had a slow start last season, this won't happen again.

As for the unknown. Provorov looks steady but I would like see him tried on te first PP unit in pre season just to see what he has. Sanheim on the first unit was Del Zotto I think was great but I wanna see Provorov in every high pressure situation. Keep in mind I didn't see him play Monday. I like his positioning, his active stick and physical game.

I am not arguing the Provorov's disposition for this season. I was just saying that it's unfair to expect the same flashiness from him as Ghost has. First of all, they are different type of players. Secondly, Ghost did not exhibit that "Wow' factor till his eventual call-up.
I am fine with Provy getting back to juniors- he definitely needs to outplay regulars to show that he belongs.
I am not fine with the unfair expectations placed on any player.

We have to keep in mind that Peovorov is 19. I think it's pretty safe bet that he is going back to juniors. I wish it was the AHL

I don't know, 3 goals in 3 games wowed me a bit. His skating was just fine, but he took a few bad penalties, had some turnovers, and had a few coverage mistakes. His "wow" factor has been apparent since he signed his contract.

Again, I agree that they play 2 different types of games. I just don't see how you can characterize Ghost's demotion last year as anything more than working out a few kinks and getting into more game action.

You know, I listened the other day after the Bears win because I love some of the over-the-top lunatics who call in. Some dude called in with some remark about the Eagles, and then said, "I want to say something about the Flyers..." and Cataldi just cut his line and berated him for wanting to talk about a team other than the Eagles.

I know it's all an act and that he's basically told by his director what topics he should talk about, but I was ready to reach through the radio and slap him.

Edit: A one-person E-A-G-L-E-S chant is incredibly uninspiring.

Very true. Chris Therein actually showed an example of a great play by Provorov last night in taking away time and space and a lane to the puck against a veteran Islander forward (Casey Cizikas I think).

Provorov's positional play and the way he angles opponents off the puck and stands up at the blue line are top notch. In many ways, he looks like a 10 year vet out there. As someone else pointed out, he just seems to slow the game down and take complete control when the puck is on his stick. This is something that cannot be taught.

Listening to the contrasting "Super Bowl champions" to "We're gonna lose every game for the rest of the year" the day after the Eagles win or lose is always interesting for 10-15 minutes at a time.

I know I'm in the minority, but as "edgy" as he was, I always liked that Josh Innes would just call people on their poop.

Totally agreed. Ghost's "wow" factor has existed for quite some time. I saw it when I watched him play for Union in the NCAA title game and saw it again when I was at a Flyers/Islanders preseason game last year.
