I mean if that's the ask then the answer is surely "no". But I'm not exactly sure that WPG is going to get an actual top pairing or top-4 defenseman in return for Trouba. That's not to say they're going to have to take back a pile of crap, but I don't know what they'll end up with.
Something like Sanheim (who is a really good defenseman), Streit (1 year remaining, gives WPG some offensive punch) and a pick could (maybe?) get it done. I dunno, not saying it will be the Flyers...just that I wouldn't be shocked if it was. - eichiefs9
Yeah, if they want a top pairing d man for Trouba, why would a team do it.
Unless other teams said top d man is on the down slope and at a high cap hit.
Who really knows though. We just base it on whats reported in the media.
If McDonagh were a few years older, you could make the argument that the trade would make sense. But at 27, it probably isn't a very logical move for the Rangers. I don't see any way they could acquire Trouba, if what McKenzie said is true. - eichiefs9
Just throwing this out there... is anybody concerned with the previous concussions McDonagh has suffered? Every time he takes a hit now, I cringe and think of Sauer.
How many has he had now? I remember the Matt Cooke hit years ago, the Komarov hit, and the punch from Simmonds. Do you think it's possible management would take this into consideration and deal him? Obviously, McDonagh is the better player, but if he is more susceptible to concussions, would it make sense to deal him and at least get a really good player back.
You would get Trouba back which would solve your right-handed D, and then Skjei would move back over to the left side.
I'm not advocating this trade, just wondering if anyone thinks it would be considered by management.

Cookes hit didn't result in any injury if I remember correctly.

Even if they have a high cap hit, it's not like Trouba is under contract for real cheap (like Hamonic). He's going to be due for a significant deal. Maybe not "$7M/per significant", but still not a team-friendly deal.
You'd have to find a team with a slightly older but still productive, really expensive defenseman who's looking to get younger and save a little bit of cap space.
I'd say maybe CGY would consider forking over Giordano, if he didn't have a NTC. He's 32, still a fantastic defenseman and makes $6.75M on the cap. They would get younger, cheaper by maybe $1.5M. Plus they'd balance out the defense a bit, swapping a LH shot for a RH one. I'd have to think that WPG would probably have to add to that deal though.
Gonna be real tough for WPG to find a) a suitor that is willing to trade someone of that caliber b) someone fits into their cap situation and c) doesn't already have a NMC/NTC, because you know nobody is exactly waiving to go play in WPG.
The only team that has someone that fits all 3 of those categories would be Mattias Ekholm from NSH and I can't see NSH doing that because Ryan Ellis is a suitable-enough 2nd pairing RH defenseman.

Wherever Trouba goes he would have to be protected though, right? This expansion draft is going to make it interesting for teams looking to trade high profile players.

It's a fair concern to bring up, but I'm not sure that management would entertain the idea of trading the team's only marquee skater, their captain, and their best defensemen who is right smack in the middle of the prime of his career (on an insanely cheap deal, no less).
Like I said earlier...if McDonagh was say...30 or 31...I think it would be completely reasonable to consider it.

Yeah, but you'd think that if a team was giving up a top-4 defenseman they would have likely been protecting that player anyway.

I think you're right. But you know what all the research seems to be showing - once you suffer a concussion or head injury, you're more susceptible to getting another one.
My point being, it just seems like he has been getting banged around a lot, and I wonder if that would be a factor management takes into consideration.
Someone posted this whole game on youtube, infamous brawl starts around 59:04. Just listening to the LA organist doodle away as the fights go on is hysterical.

I think if anything, they might wait to see what they have in Skjei, Graves, etc. before they made any decision on defense.
What am I supposed to say, Dale? "Oh hidy ho officer! We've had a doozy of a day. There we were minding our own business, just doing chores around the house when these college kids started killing themselves all over my property."

Graves is good. And he's only gotten better since he left the Q. - tomburton99
I hope he becomes a good NHL'er. Seemed a little bleak there on defense. If McIlrath can become a solid 2nd or 3rd pairing. Skjei eventually become a top pairing, Graves I have no idea his ceiling. Won't look so bad.
Just need to buy out G after this year, and hope Staal requests a trade or plays better.

They will both play better as long as Beukeboom's system isn't like last years chase-em-all-over-the-fvcking-ice-while-in-your-own-zone system they decided to use out of nowhere.
Rangers go back to their zone d-system, they'll be in good shape.

Yup. 100% agree. Defense doesn't have the foot speed for it.
