Whatever.. It is still over 13 mill of cap relief, if they need it.

That's not how it works, they can't put them on the island until they reach the cap. I think I saw the other day that with cowen off the books (and the cap savings from the buyout) they are 2mil under the cap.
- burn

When a player is placed on LTIR their cap hit still counts against the team. So Horton, Lupul, Robidas, and Cowen all still have active cap hits. Now the team is allowed to temporarily go over the cap while it has players on LTIR, but only to the point of that players cap hit. So they can spend an extra 5.25 mil to fill Lupul's roster spot, but they must clear enough space for Lupul to regain his roster spot once he's medically cleared to play. The shady thing the Leafs are doing is banking on the fact that not a single player mentioned earlier is playing another NHL game.

So effectively, the injured player's hit still counts, but the Leafs can spend ~16 mil over the cap this season.

I know that's a thing to say, because most of you know that. But might as well post it in case some don't.

the technicality which the Leafs are leveraging is the Horton or Marc Savard situation- which really isn't shady. Horton and Savard will never play again. Lupul may never play again... look how long it took Carey Price to recover from his abdominal injury, and he's younger and doesn't have Lupul's injury (and worn out) history. Robidas situation is almost identical... guy didn't do anything wrong just couldn't play effectively anymore due to his leg injuries.

Cowen's situation is completely different. He's a buyout target and the ruling (not sure when that will happen) has to do with his fitness to play, which I believe was established last spring. Leafs couldn't buy him out until July 1st or shortly thereafter and he chose between the spring physical being cleared and July 1st to have surgery (I believe) and deemed himself unfit to play and therefore couldn't be bought out.
Cowen's situation only impacted the Leafs during the past summer - when it turned out they didn't need that CAP relief or CAP space anyway.

I was going to bring up the question of whether Lou and Co. would even trade for a guy like Trouba, after the trade request and the whole spiel about no player being bigger than the team and yadda, yadda, yadda. But they traded for Rychel, whom I believe requested a trade as well. Just a little more quietly.

So who knows.

- BetterCallSaul

I'm sure what's being reported isn't the whole story - and we're now getting tidbits from Trouba's Winnipeg teammates.

If Lou is interested he will do his homework QUIETLY... and I would guess that the Evander Kane situation in Winnipeg is still front and center in their minds. THey will not want to have another distraction - if Trouba is indeed that in the locker room.

I hate these roster technicalities being the reason guys don't make the team out of camp.

Happened to Brown and Nylander last year (as per Babcock) and it looks like it might affect Brown again this year, despite him having a heck of a camp thus far.

(frank)ing waive the plugs and deal with the aftermath. I'd rather see Brown on the team than Greening any day of the week.

I also don't know why some are counting Leivo out. He is a good player, maybe not the strongest skater, but has a good shot and is pretty decent in the corners.

Leivo is a meh player.
Its the first pre season game of camp, so we dont know who has or has not made the team.
Besides, if someone really deserves to be on the team, they'll find a way to get them on...if they dont...they dont.

the real problem is that those caps (excluding the contracts that are expiring) will count in the offseason next year. So even if they moved everyone to LTIR and then spent the available cap on new players, come next summer they better hope that there are enough contracts expiring and/or moved this season to make up the difference (and yes I know they can go over 10%). Also if Matthews and Nylander and Marner all hit their bonuses that will be an overage for next season that they need account for.

If some of those guys don't play. How do we move them for picks and prospects. Or is the rebuild over? We should just play all the kids and not worry about future projects or anything. Sounds like most leafs fans. When Babcock said expect pain. I doubt he meant one season.

Just checked it out......TSN 4 and 5. I guess TSN needs something to show, since they don't own most of the professional sports rights anymore. No National Hockey contract, for another 10 years....No Blue Jays, or MLB playoffs. Very little NFL or NBA. CFL doesn't count, because it's a semi-pro league. Bell Globe Media ruins everything that it touches.

Just got kodi and still trying to figure that poop out

Kodi still sucks for sports.

I have read and tried everything recommended and I still can't get a decent quality feed off Kodi.

For everything else, it's great.

I like Leivo a lot better than Greening.

Regarding who makes the team, if what you say is true then Brown and Nylander would have made it out of camp last season. Alas, they did not.

So last Friday at 230am I woke up wide awake with a voice inside me saying "You have to quit smoking now James".....this freaked me out even though I had been thinking about it for the last few months....so many reasons...but this voice that I couldn't recognize was so vivid and firm that I knew it was a sign not be ignored...and I knew that my wife was just waiting for my queue, and she was going to quit as well....We are both almost 50 years old.....I've been smoking cigarettes 1 to 2 packs per day for the last 33 years....and my wife has started menopause.....this is not going to be easy...I've quit a few times before and I remember the triggers that made me start back up again...so I spent Friday talking to my wife and prepared to quit by choice...no cessation pills/gum/patches/vapes just cold turkey by choice and there's a pack of smokes in the cupboard for when the mindgames start...and they did....I told her that I'm approaching this as a choice...I choose to not smoke...if I can't stand the mind(frank) anymore, grab a smoke out of the cupboard and light it up and think about my choice to not smoke and why....finish the smoke, put it out, don't beat myself up over it and carry on with my life choosing not to smoke...so Saturday rolled by and I had 2 smokes instead of 32 smokes...Sunday rolled by and I had 0 smokes...today so far, 0 smokes.....I haven't slept well for 2 straight nights, waking up at 200am and just laying still and calm until the alarm goes off at 530....I'm farting like crazy and a mild case of the poops...my face is tingling and and my eyes are glazed over...I feel like I'm in a delerium daze kind of...like I smoked a joint but I didn't....did I tell you the wife has started menopause??? yeah that's nice....so the days are filled with each of us apologizing to each other and saying we got this...

I got this.

If they're waiver exempt...the AHL is not a bad thing...especially when we have a good coach like Keefe there. No need to rush some of these kids if it's not needed....not winning the cup this year I don't believe...play the vets til theyre traded or the contract is up.

Smoking cessation has a higher success rate with stop smoking aides... statistically speaking. I tried many times cold turkey, I've cut down significantly (0 unless I'm drunk) since I got a douche vape.

If you aren't icing the best team possible based on merit, and are instead playing guys because of waiver status and eligibility, that's not rebuilding.

At this point in the rebuild, they should probably be enabling young talent so that the team can become good and stay good for long periods of time. Not biting the bullet on expiring deals just so you can grab a 3rd rounder at the trade deadline. They did that for the last 2-3 years (since Nylander was drafted). At some point you have to try to be good.

About the bolded, how is giving someone a spot on the team that they earned "rushing" them?

Brown and Leivo are like 22-23 or so with multiple years of pro hockey at the AHL level. They aren't exactly fresh out of junior here.
