You can't trade the penalty. It's stuck with us. NHL (frank)ed the recapture teams. - JRoenick97
Yep, it's pretty specific. The team that benefitted from the lower cap hit is the one that eats the penalty if the player retires early. More than likely he's a Hawk 'til the end of the deal.

If you're going to lose part of the core anyway, what about Seabs and TVR for Trouba? We give Winnipeg leadership and a top 2 RHD, and a legitimate bottom pairing RHD, in exchange for a young top pairing (definitely top 4) RHD. Frees up money to sign Panarin, AND replaces Seabrook. - tvetter
I am gonna repeat my post from elsewhere one time:
The Jacob Trouba situation is classic early first round pick scenario we see re-occurring with these youngsters, still RFAs and in want and need of big fat deals to continue their on the job training. In my humble opinion Trouba is a bit different than the few other young defenders that came before him looking for the big payback ahead of time; Trouba has shown enough to my eyes that he is going to be a quality player, although I don’t think anyone can predict his upside in a top contender’s pecking order until he gets there. He can only become a better player if he plays HIS position (Right side defense)and if he is given the opportunity to play there in all phases. I can’t see why any NHL team wouldn’t be interested. The sticking point is how many NHL teams are waving the white flag at their defense enough to go from established defender (the Jets return player) to a trainee…that weakens your team’s ability to contend now, right?
And are the out of contention franchises gonna send a really good defender youngster back..A forward for sure…but even if there was interest in Trouba for an established team, (say Chicago) it becomes a matter of subtraction of one of their big 3, or moving Hjarlmarrson to the left side even though he prefers playing the off handed right side. You don’t subtract a established solid defensive starter to fufill Trouba’s wishes, unless you are rebuilding and not planning on a playoff run, right?
And that’s BEFORE Trouba’s final salary deliberation, that just might skew your team’s established pecking order…if one of your home grown defensive prospects needs a new deal, he is going to look at Trouba’s deal and his play and say, “Wait, I am better right now than HE IS…”
My point of this blabbering on post, is the kid is really worth something, but all the planets will have to align for both sides in a trade to make the deal good for both sides…
Danny DeKeyser and something would give the Wings what they have been missing…a CHANCE to actually get a defender who has the POTENTIAL to make them better long term… |

I am telling you they will use the actual Hossa money to structure a Panarin contract that dummies up obvious items as additional bonuses and that is how they cope.
Trading Hossa doesn't get you off the hook and he signed that contract with an understanding he would be a lifetime hawk.
And Hossa taking a front office job with the Hawks doesn't get them off the hook either. The league purposefully added that recapture when they realized the slicker Cap savy GMs were loopholing their way around and wanted those teams to suffer down the road if in fact their long term signings WERE intended to be front loaded with explicit purpose of the players NOT playing long-term AND retiring with team only having the 1 mil contracts deals... |

http://www.spotrac.com/nh...yotes/chris-pronger-1411/, Pronger has the same kind of contract and they are letting him work for the NHL while he is on LTIR. My guess is something along these lines will happen with Hossa. The contract was legal when it was signed and then the NHL changed the laws on the next CBA so your highest year cannot be more then double your lowest.

I think he had that condition when he played though. You know the only reason he is able to "skate" the recapture rule is because of the team he played for. (Bettman/NBC/Comcast all in bed together). |

Eh, there was an article and interview with him a couple years ago. It was pretty debilitating. He can't skate even recreationally and has a hard tome playing with his kid. |

Difficult comparison. But $6 million for Panarin would be fair. |

I think that is in a lot of ways, this is a discussion point that we could talk about fro weeks.
We have a longer canvass to iew on Saad.
Clearly the little eel probably in the majority of the fans eyes "looks" like the better player, and as I stated earlier Panarin seemed less stunng when out on the ce in World Cup against elite players.
If Kucherov "only" gets six million, I want Kucherov over Panarin.
All StanBo has to do is sign another Bickell deal if Panarin shows little growth and you are gonna end up with more issues until the majority of the GMs and owners start crying a Cap raise. |

No, Pronger is not the same due to his injury status.
Hossa is still fit as a fiddle.

For the 100th time, Hossa is not going anywhere because of cap recapture penalties. Hawk for life. - JRoenick97
I think I figured this right:
How it Works
For every year the player's salary exceeds his AAV, that amount of cap savings is "banked" against the team. The only way to "un-bank" this amount is for the player to play in the years where his salary drops below his cap hit. By the end of the deal, the entire banked amount will be exhausted. If the player retires early, then the banked amount will be divided by the number of seasons the player walked away from and charged against that team's cap hit for those seasons he isn't playing.
Hossa
For seven year Hossa's salary was $2,626,000 over his AAV.
Recapture Penalty if he retires in:
2016/17
2,625,000 X 7 = 18,375,000
18,375,000 ~ 5 = 3,675,000
2017/18
2,625,000 X 6 = 15,750,000
15,750,000 ~ 4 = 3,937,500
2018/19
2,625,000 X 5 = 13,125,000
13,125,000 ~ 3 = 4,375,000
2019/20
2,625,000 X 4 = 10,500,000
10,500,000 ~ 2 = 5,250,000
2020/21
2,625,000 X 3 = 7,875,000

In other words a hossa for all the years of his deal is most financially responsible than him retiring, no matter which team he erires with as the hawks get the hit..... |

Yes - I know good history in the KHL - but only one excellent season here, with Kane on his right.
I'd like to see another one, but I don't know how long he'll let Stan hold off.

It's not really - $6m in 2015 is not the same as $6m in 2017 because they cap has gone up, however little. This is why contracts from years ago, like say Keith's, look great vs contracts being signed by lesser defenders.
That said, I'd personally prefer Saad, if just because the Hawks are lacking in the elements a player like Saad brings to the table vs Panarin. |

It seems like less of a risk to pay him now than to wait, imo.
If they pay Panarin now and it turns out he only really works with Kane, that's not ideal but it's okay because they can just slot him next to Kane. Kunitz made most of his money not because he was actually all that good, but because he clicked with Crosby like no one else did.
If they hold off and he has another monster year, with or without Kane, he'll likely want to be paid more money. |

McKenzie says the Jets' asking price is very specific - they want a left hand shot defensemen of similar age, experience, and potential. It's possible the ask will change since that's a hard grab, but it sounds like they very much want a d-man that is close to what Trouba is. The Hawks don't have that.

Eli - any thoughts on Spencer Abbott with his time briefly with Rockford a couple years ago. He lit it up in that stint and then heading the the SEL in '15-'16, where he had 35 pts in 42 games (good for 22nd overall in scoring).
He scored 2 goals today in the scrimmage and I know he's probably nothing more than an AHL player (being only 5'9) but he's 27 years old and is a natural LW.
I found it interested that HF below compared his style and referenced the competition of Motte to his profile.
Sounds like he's got a gritty side to him.
(Thoughts from my couch on a Saturday night)
From Hockey's Future:
Talent Analysis
Abbott is a highly-skilled forward with great vision. He is known for his playmaking ability and technical skills but his lack of size and bulk present a challenge at the highest level. He is a huge asset on the powerplay and isn’t afraid of going into the dirty areas.
Future
Abbott played some of his best hockey for Chicago AHL affiliate Rockford at the end of the 2015-16 season, earning a lucrative contact from Frolunda in Sweden. Now 27, he plays a skill and grit game despite his lack of size and gets the most of his ability. With similar younger players such as Tyler Motte and Anthony Louis coming up through the Chicago pipeline he may not have another opportunity with the Blackhawks. Abbott could do worse than finishing out his career in Europe but would be of interest to organization in need of scoring and willing to give him a chance. - TyCamScore
I love Spencer Abbott. Good kid, and fun to watch on the attack and on the PP in the "A." He can be a scoring machine there, but he's too small and one-dimensional to play in the NHL.
He'll be a leader and scoring help in Rockford this season. |

Do you think there's any way we can swap him for a D prospect? Maybe someone who is in need of depth scoring? If he's not going to make it with us.... Get something for him. |

He's filler in Rockford - to help the youngsters along and to add some scoring punch. That's what Abbott was specifically brought in for. |
