except the world cup of soccer doesn't have teams composed of multiple countries and has qualifying rounds which allows for teams from all over the world to compete. It is Quality, I won't argue that. - neem55
How many countries play soccer at a high level. There are basically six countries in the world that have a shot at winning a best on best tourney. Adding teams to get rid of Europe and NA teams only lowers the quality of hockey. |

well that is the most racist thing I've heard in a long while, so let's just agree to disagree on this one. - neem55
Wanna play the race card. My grandmother went through the residential school system. My father grew up on a reserve. Neither complained about the hand they were dealt or what they went through growing up. They went out and worked hard made something from nothing and became successful, good people. To this day I still haven't gone for my Native Status card. Me and my efforts and actions define who I am. |

The Olympics is an actual meaningful event where the best athletes in the world compete for their country in a multitude of sports. You didn't debunk anything, but thanks. The logic is the world cup of hockey is a lesser thing than the Olympics, which it most definitely is as the world cup of hockey is one sport, created by millionaires to make money and not actually a level playing field where countries compete (notice that Voynov and Kovalchuk are not here?, how there are teams Europe and NA?). NHL players in a tournament that is meaningless getting injured, sounds bad to me. The hockey has been good though! - neem55
Well clearly its not meaningless to the players, otherwise would they be playing in the first place, yet alone playing with intensity and putting their bodies on the line? you're not convincing anyone except yourself with the injury argument. Injuries happen, all the time, no matter what/when/where - its not gonna change anything.
the Olympics is on the brink of not letting NHLers play again, so this tourney was brought back to replace it. The Canada Cup which evolved to The World Cup and now this - were created so NHLers/Pros could play on an international level and MAKE MONEY - so its no different financially than it has ever been.
Its only lesser cus this is somewhat of a inaugural year and it has to build a history/rivalries. For those that think this is a one off or shouldn't happen again, bad news, its here to stay and intends on being the new version of olympic level international hockey. Whether you wish to accept it or not is up to you.
and the reason why the Russians didn't send everyone is political Mallard and MacLean were talking about it today basically - the KHL doesn't want their players leaving for the NHL. The Gov't won't even show the games on national TV there. And Voynov isn't allowed into the country!!

Maybe this will help people understand where I am coming from. My gramma once told me a story of what happened to her in there. After she told me (which I will never repeat) I said to her I would hunt down and kill everyone of those m@therf@ckers. To which she replied. NO that is not what we do we are better than that. Fighting hate with hate does not work. We are better than that you are better than that. Just be a good person. Let them hate. Hate is the enemy.
That is my problem with BLM fighting hate with hate, discrimination with discrimination does not work.
So maybe before you go calling me a racist because I disagree with a movement. I don't hate. Bigot maybe. Hateful racist no. |

It was such a BS conviction as well. The victim saying that she wasn't abused(probably was) and that not mattering. US justice system is f*cked. |

Wow, between the BLM remarks/anecdotal Canadian non-racism and this, this thread is awfully short-sighted tonight. As per the LA Times and the police report:
Marta Varlamova, Voynov’s wife, told police the couple started arguing during a Halloween party. Voynov removed her costume glasses and stomped on them, then, outside the venue, he punched her in the left jaw, according to the report.
“Voynov pushed her to the ground approximately six to seven times with both hands, telling her that he wanted a divorce and to ‘Get out,’ “ the report said.
Varlamova told police that Voynov then kicked her five to six times while on the ground. She said she screamed for him to stop.
When she rose, the report said, Voynov pushed her into the corner of a flat-screen television mounted on the wall, opening a gash above Varlamova’s left eye. Varlamova said the couple’s bedroom was “covered in her blood.”
...
A doctor used eight stitches to close the cut and ordered a tetanus shot during the two-hour visit.
Just because she got scared/intimidated/whatever afterwards and backtracked her story, doesn't mean someone shouldn't be convicted of a crime they committed (though he plead no contest).

her initial claim was that he did not hurt her. They still pressed charges against him and then got that statement later on. Like i said, he probably did beat her, but that doesn't change the fact that something seems off when a statement changes later after talking to police and DA. |

You mean a guarantee at personal and family safety from the police wouldn't help mitigate any possible fear of retaliation from Voynov (or someone associated with him)? Or that it took her a few days to cope with the reality and register that she's better off without the one she thought she loved?
I don't see how that's unreasonable or suspicious at all. |

I have a comment. I know most will disagree but I am going for it anyway. You have a stadium full of Canadians supporting their team and in a game Vs the USA and they are all standing and singing the US national anthem.#respect. Then you have multi millionaires playing a f@cking kids game in the NFL sitting because they are "oppressed". F@ck me. What the f@ck is wrong with people. - thundachunk
You seem like a nice guy thunda, but I think you really don't get what's going on. Regardless of how one football player chooses to express himself. I think you have to be pretty oblivious to not acknowledge the disparity of race in the US and realistically here in Canada as well although different issues.

For all of you who think this tournament is must see tv , fantastic . I am watching survivor tonight instead of Team Canada.
Not everyone has to feel the same about this. If a game is on during the day I will probably watch it, if an evening game I probably won't .
So this does have Spengler Cup level for me .Sorry. - VANTEL
I dont remember once saying its must see TV. I just dont agree with you comparing it to the Spengler cup.
I know what this tourny is, and Im not at all invested in it. I just think the comparison is a little obscure.
I will watch this if I feel like it, I've never seen a Spengler cup game in my life. Nor do I plan to do so. |
