From the Norris division:
Colorado, Minnesota, Nashville, Chicago

From the Smythe division:
LA, Vancouver, San Jose, Take your pick of 1 of the 3 other Western Canadian teams. Winnepeg?


Because it's not just Buffalo, the market really goes up to Toronto and the ratings are US viewers only and there are a lot of Canadian Sabres fans that add to the already high ratings. There's a reason why they use ratings share and not just solely number of viewers.

Nashville I feel is a better market for hockey than Dallas is, plus, (frank) the Stars and the horses they rode in on.

Colorado because I like Denver, and I've liked the Avs since the move from Quebec. Also geography. And because I couldn't have both St. Louis and Colorado.

And for the Canadian team, I'd probably say Winnepeg purely for geographical reasons.

It was a good effort to expand into the South and Southwest, but it just didn't work out for them.

If it was just Philly against Buffalo, sure, Buffalo would almost certainly lose, but Buffalo against Nashville, and Winnipeg? It's Buffalo. And why should Detroit get a team? Tradition? Then every team established after the Sabres doesn't deserve to be there, so goodbye Tampa, San Jose, Washington, Minnesota, Colorado, and Nashville and Winnipeg again.

There are many reasons why Buffalo would be in a 16 team league. And a lot why they wouldn't, but to automatically write them off is silly.
