The problem with Bogosian has always been between the ears. He's clearly got the talent and size and a much better offensive touch than he's given credit for. In fact Id say that hes probably better off in a more offensive role than defensive.
This isnt the 20th century, defence isn't measured based on your ability to lay out big hits (and Bogo misses on quite a few). Ill take the player who can take away the passing lane or perform a well timed stick check over the guy who will be out of position constantly but gets 10 seconds on the carruba collision of the game. And the notion that Bogosian played better in the 2nd half is kind of misguided. The only thing that changed is he was given more of an offensive assignment/opportunity against weaker teams (schedule got way easier) and he put up more points as a result. Thats not him getting better, hes played close to 500 games in the nhl at this point he is what he is. That's just Bylsma finally putting him in a position to succeed based on his strengths instead of a position to fail based on some outdated theory that hitting=defence.
Bogosian may be a fine player but a) you can get similar production for far less $ on the cap b) they need a different style of d-man on this team any ways. There's too much of the same kind. Michael brought up the panthers a few days ago questioning the decision to have too many of the analytics darlings. This is fair and I agree but we're basically in the same position. I see 5 guys who all play the same style and share the same weaknesses. You're not moving risto, Kulikov just got here, and mccabe is on a great deal. They don't need Bogosian, especially at 5.14 mil. - Sabresfan-365
Hard to prove if Bogo's play improved from the coaches telling him to try to score more, or from getting farther and farther removed from injury. I believe it is the latter. I also disagree that his physicality is a detriment....his skating, passing, and even his shot are his strengths, and I can recall more smart plays by him than being out of position from trying to lay a big hit.
In general he is not the smartest guy out there and does get caught not covering the guy he should, but I see that just being a weakness in his game and not a missed-hit issue so much.

Hard to prove if Bogo's play improved from the coaches telling him to try to score more, or from getting farther and farther removed from injury. I believe it is the latter. I agree with the personal assessment of Bogo, but I disagree with the 2.5-3.5M salary assessment. 2.5 doesn't get you much in the way of a solid defender anymore. 3.5 gets you close, but I don't think Bogo on another team makes less than 4m dollars. Just personal opinion based on current contracts for top 4 d throughout the league. Bogo makes more than Hjalmarsson so something is wrong, but around the league I see most average top4 D getting 4+.

I agree with the personal assessment of Bogo, but I disagree with the 2.5-3.5M salary assessment. 2.5 doesn't get you much in the way of a solid defender anymore. 3.5 gets you close, but I don't think Bogo on another team makes less than 4m dollars. Just personal opinion based on current contracts for top 4 d throughout the league. Bogo makes more than Hjalmarsson so something is wrong, but around the league I see most average top4 D getting 4+. - RhinoFan
Agreed. It depends on how the roster in constructed too. If you have 2 guys, we can use TB or LA as an example (Doughty, Muzzin - Stralman, Hedman) who take a big bulk of the minutes, than the 3-6 D men should be cost effective players who can play a limited role.
If you plan on evening out the minutes in the top 4, like playing all of them 20-23 min ay given night, then investing heavy into a 2nd pairing might be a good idea.
Ideally, if you believe Bogo is a better fit as a #4 D (which I do) than I personally wouldn't want that guy making a ton. I'd rather have that slot open for a McCabe, Guhle or a 2-4 mil guy.

4 years left on that contract. Not too bad, not great.
What I'm waiting for is Guhle and someone else to take the 5-6 spots and do so for cheap. That's when I want to have that top 2 guy and be willing to pay him whatever we have to.
