I'm pretty sure Peca sat out an entire season as well as a RFA.

It was more common in the before the latest CBA because it was the players only tool as a RFA if mgmt decided not to pay them.

It still is for players who can't go to arbitration yet. I can see Gaudreau doing it if he wants 8 and the team still wants to pay around 65. They will be in a tougher spot if he remains unsigned then he will. Unless it is getting close to Dec 1(i believe that is when RFA's can't sign for the rest of the season). But people in management will likely have lost their jobs by then.

Elite RFA's r in another class.
Gaudreau has proven he is elite & IMO will continue to do so.
No fan of comparisons tbh but $7m per is the min going rate for his calibre.
Elite C's & true superstars who r the face of the game get more.
Eg Ovie Sid Kane Toews & McDavid etc
Top 1 D also eg Karlsson OEL Doughty etc.

The Flames are going to have to pay him now, or end up in PK Subban situation where he cashes in a year or 2 with Kane/Toews money. Better to pay him 8x8 now, it'll be bargain by the time the contract is up.
