If a player says "we," then yes, he may be referencing the organization, but that would include the players themselves as well, as they are a big part of the organization.
For instance, if Kadri had a quote like, "We didn't play well tonight," he's likely talking about the players and maybe coaches, not the GM and owner.
Again, the intent is clear. - jmatchett383
The organization as a whole (kessel trade, dion trade, sign ufa spare parts to deal at the deadline) didn't try to win last year. That is what he said.
He didn't say the players deliberately lost games. He's simply saying last year the organization made it clear they had to take a step back to start moving forward.
Yes his intent is clear. |

Sure, if one of Nylander/Matthews/Marner is available and the defenseman isn't Provorov or Gostisbehere. |

Honestly, there is only one player in the NHL that I'd trade Provorov for, and no, it's not Kadri or Lupul. He really has a chance to be a Norris winner.
For Ghost, I'd need someone who's an established yet young All Star NHL player.
Nylander for Sanheim+ could be a realistic trade, I think. But the + would be less than a 1st round pick. |

He asked a question, and I gave him an answer. I didn't say it was a good or bad deal. I also never implied that any deal would be a 1-for-1. |

He obviously didn't choose his words wisely, and I'm clearly being sarcastic, but look at the quote:
"We are playing every single game to win"
"we are not trying to finish in the cellar anymore"
At face value, the first quote implies that they were not playing to win every game last year.
The second quote implies that they were trying to finish in the basement.
Clearly (I'd hope for his sake), he misplaced words (i.e. "We are trying to not finish in the cellar anymore," is better). Just having a little fun. - jmatchett383
Oh I can easily see why it is fun for you guys... and I would be having exactly the same fun.
It was an incredibly stupid thing for him to say.
I also don't believe for a second the Leafs threw a game last season.
As an organization, they didn't care whether they won or lost last year, and clearly they knew it was ultimately better to fail... that I can acknowledge |

my favourite was when Buffalo traded Ehnroth after he stole a few wins. not sit him. trade him far away. Tim Murray is an animal. - DoubleDown
Didn't the Leafs do something similar, this past season, or the one before? A goalie was playing well at the end of the year so they benched him. It might have even been Bernier last year?
I'm surprised the Leafs let Nylander play at all last year.

(frank) off with the Shanahan saying leafs earned the pick bullpoop, it's getting old already. I really dont think he meant the leafs earned it cause they worked hard to be the the worst like people want to say. They earned it the hard way because they were the worst team in the league and that was probably pretty hard for a bunch of pro athletes and competitive people to come to the rink and be poopty. I'm sure losing as many games as they did wasn't easy to go thru for anyone in the organization. Doubt any of them were having very much fun during the season. Vancouver fans love to throw that one out there "Shanahan said they earned that pick!!" You are very spatso like by the way. - ClarksonDavid
I took as him saying they earned it by making some tough decisions, like trading away their best player. and then trading away their captain for virtually nothing in return, except cap space that will be valuable in the future. Basically they earned it by having a painful, but necessary, season.

I think Matthews is going to be a very talented player. I'm not sure he will ever be "elite" though, as in a top-5 player. I believe that Provorov can be a top-3 defenseman. Because of that, I would only trade him for McDavid (which will not happen). It's also because Philadelphia needs defensive help more than they need offensive help. |

People Are reading way too much into that kadri quote. He didn't say a thing that wasnt true. They traded away their top talent and then their captain, that's not trying to win.
He didn't say the players deliberately lost games.
FYI the leafs had more Pts last year than they did the year before. - burn

Fine, Gostisbehere for Nylander, but every Maple Leafs fan has to wear a Canadiens jersey to every game they attend for 2 years. |
