@shrike, Why are talking about this in the first place? "relative to the NHL"... doesn't make sense... you seem to claim the Leafs are the most popular team in the league or highest net worth etc... but in both cases you're wrong.
the Mussel pointed out above ur wrong about their value and surveys in Canada show the leafs aren't even the most popular team in the country (Habs are a clear #1) - kaptaan
This would likely change if the Leafs manage to turn their fortunes around. "Casual" ie. bandwagon fans are easily swayed |

Patch is streaky...he will get hot for a few stretches, burry a few empty net goals and get his 30+ goals. - Symba007
Woah, really? I didn't realise that he was on that level. I knew that he was a useful scorer, but in no way did I think that he was in the same echelon as guys like Vatrano... |

That might be an exaggeration... I don't think patches is gonna have his number retired when he's done his illustrious career. |

Yes after 6-8 years of being a complete disaster, the leafs just recently drop from top spot in popularity and value.
In two years, they'll be back on top if they go on a upward swing. - Fakepartofme
wrong again... they've never been the most popular team in Canada as far as any actual survey is concerned. there are two that have happened in the last 5-6 years and both show the Habs as the clear preference of hockey fans in the country. |

Or you could say that their popularity could increase a bit from the high that it's already experiencing due to multiple years of playoff success if they managed to make it to the finals or win a cup. |

Out of curiosity, do they include American teams when they gauge the popularity of teams in Canada?
I.E do they look at all teams or just isolate the Canadian ones. |

Considering the surveys tend to be "Survey of 13 people in local region show overwhelmingly that they prefer local team" those usually aren't a good indicator. Franchise value is good for a hypothesis. For me, looking at the crowd at road games is usually a pretty good indicator IMO. |

Would you guess they were #1 for American teams in Canada though?
Or is it a mix of Original 6 teams with no clear favorite? |

Clear no.
The fan bases are relatively close.
As for value.....its been clearly the leafs for over a decade....only recently have they dropped.
Once they start winning again....they'll be number one.
All you'll hear about is Leafs this, Leafs that, Toronto this and that.
It will be great for fans of second rate teams......like the nucks. |

It would be my guess. (with possible exception Red Wings)
Pockets of fans in southern Quebec and the Maritimes. |
