He a good defenseman, but $9 million per is way too much. Trading him was the right move, but Bergevin should have went in the picks/prospects direction instead of Webber. In order to stay competitive in a cap league, a steady stream of good young players on ELC's coming into the system gives teams a sustained advantage. - The Shrike

Messier isn't in the same conversation as Gretzky, same with those other guys.
otherwise i'd agree with you on your general points that asset mgmt and mgmt in general have been the bane of this organization...
until these guys in charge actually accomplish something I don't think anyone can give them credit for being "good" or anything positive really. a team that finished 30th and the President (shanahan) acknowledges that the club "earned it" just showed where his head was at.
the team has to win its division, get to the 4th round of the playoff tournament, maybe win the regular season championship (president's trophy), and generally be successful for a stretch... then give the organization and mgmt some credit.
the Senators did it for awhile, the Nux had it for awhile... i can recall watching the team and knowing that in any game against any team the club could legitimately win. listening to the opposition announcers on the opposition feed and hearing them tell their own fans that it's going to be tough to win against the Nux, and how solid they were top 1 or 3 in the league in a myriad of criteria and when going into the third period down 2-3 goals never felt like the team was out of it.
that was a great time to be a fan for sure, and i relished that time frankly cuz it never lasts as long as you hope and you might not win the SC tournie... but it was a fun ride.
i think what Prince is saying is that you need to get that level of success to judge accurately about the place in history for some of these players that have had some flash but no sustained success in a leafs uniform. - kaptaan
What Prince is doing is blaming Sundin for the lack of Leafs success, when he is quite probably the greatest player this organization has ever had and he was consistently surrounded by sub-par talent.
His opinion is idiotic, and par for him. Your support of his stupidity is par for a Vancouver fan.
In a league without a cap, absolutely, but in a cap league you have to evaluate players not just by production, but by production in relation to their cap hit.
I put Toews in the same category, great player, horrible cap hit.
