Other fans troll us because we're like whipped dogs who don't want to show our teeth anymore. What Leaf fans have forgotten along the way is we're the greatest fanbase on this earth. Maybe it's time we started behaving like it again. - The Shrike

Definatey 1st, and if the Leafs at any point had owners willing to spend like the Man U, Cowboys, and Yankees owners they would have been much more successful at winning.
Ballard...too cheap, Stavros...too personally broke, Teachers pension + Tannenbaum...too focused on short term profit, and chummy with the BOG to question a salary cap that hinders the advantage that their superior fanbase gives their team.

leafs were ready to throw money at players, but they went to teams where they thought they'd win the cup, or the team wasn't in a position to compete at the time when some guys came available...
i think it's fans who claim their team's fanbase is the greatest in the world, that turn off other fans of other teams, and then those other fans of other teams troll and make fun of the fans of the team that keep claiming they're the best fans in the world. |

He is declining and overpaid.
Still a good player though.
Completely deserved to receive some payback after trying to take out Canada's #1 defenseman! |

Messier isn't in the same conversation as Gretzky, same with those other guys.
otherwise i'd agree with you on your general points that asset mgmt and mgmt in general have been the bane of this organization...
until these guys in charge actually accomplish something I don't think anyone can give them credit for being "good" or anything positive really. a team that finished 30th and the President (shanahan) acknowledges that the club "earned it" just showed where his head was at.
the team has to win its division, get to the 4th round of the playoff tournament, maybe win the regular season championship (president's trophy), and generally be successful for a stretch... then give the organization and mgmt some credit.
the Senators did it for awhile, the Nux had it for awhile... i can recall watching the team and knowing that in any game against any team the club could legitimately win. listening to the opposition announcers on the opposition feed and hearing them tell their own fans that it's going to be tough to win against the Nux, and how solid they were top 1 or 3 in the league in a myriad of criteria and when going into the third period down 2-3 goals never felt like the team was out of it.
that was a great time to be a fan for sure, and i relished that time frankly cuz it never lasts as long as you hope and you might not win the SC tournie... but it was a fun ride.
i think what Prince is saying is that you need to get that level of success to judge accurately about the place in history for some of these players that have had some flash but no sustained success in a leafs uniform. - kaptaan

The Leafs were never ready to throw the money at players that other teams were willing to. Signing UFA's like Corson and Roberts isn't the same as signing Gretzky, which they could have done, and that's just the tip of that iceberg.

How many other fanbases can you point to that are as fervent as this one, yet whose team hasn't won in almost 50 years?
Other teams troll us because our team has lost so much. They can't understand why we don't give up on our team like they do when their team goes on a streak like this, so they're jealous and resentful of our resolve. Well, let me just say that you will never break our resolve, because Leaf Nation is the greatest nation on this earth.
