Rieder didn't want to sign in Edmonton for concerns of not getting ample playing time (behind Eberle and Yak). As such, management traded him to get something for him. Unless he's changed his stance, I don't see how he's got any less competition now. I don't think he'd be in any more of a fortuitous position now than he was then. - MaximumBone
Yeah I remember Stauffer going on about it after the trade. Rieder was pretty adamant about wanting out the way he described it.
I doubt it. His issue before was he wanted to play top-6 minutes which he still wouldn't be getting here. I believe that's the problem with the negotiations with Arizona as it stands. - MaximumBone
I redited that post btw.
I don't think it wil lbe an issue since the 2nd and 3rd lines will probably get the same amount of TOI (15-18 range).
Don't forget that Rieder is a PK specialist and a good one at that. Once scored two shorthanded goals in one penalty kill!
Yeah, now it'll be behind Eberle and Puljujarvi... - laughs2907
Not necessarily. His possible linemates would be Maroon and LD, therefore he would be either considered a 2nd liner or 3rd liner depending on the night. Nonetheless, he will be getting 15-18 TOI per game and don't forget that he is a PK specialist as well.
I wouldn't say horrid skating, but you do have a point with inconsistency issues. However, is is still very young and honestly, I think he is goin to get better and better after each year. Don't forget that he is still adjusting to the NHL style of game. This was his first actual NHL season. - EdmHockeyMan
The other gripe was being a big massive body who doesn't play physical
Btw, the two shorthanded goals scored by Rieder were done within 58 seconds on the same Penalty kill against, yep, you guessed it, the Edmonton Oilers.

Don't get me wrong I'd love to have Rieder on the Oilers, just not for $3.5/4 mill per (his rumoured ask). Also I just can't see Rieder going for it. - Wildschwein
Honestly, many of us here would do it. The deal would HAVE to see Yak going the other way, therefore 2.5m in cap space would be opened. In essence, you just traded away a question mark for something better that will be secured for 3-4 years, has good potential and IS SHOWING IT, all the while you're only giving up 1m in cap space and a roster spot.
Also, I can definitely see Rieder going for it. Like I said, it's a new management, so a fresh start. What happened in the past is the past. Also, don't forget about the McDavid factor.
I'd be all about Rieder even at $3.5mil, I just don't see him being too pleased with the role he'd get beyond this year. He's comparable to Pisani (better in a number of ways) and would likely settle into a similar role, but I fear that wouldn't be enough for him. Might as well grab Kuhnhackl (one of my non-Severson, personal scouting successes) while we're at it to make another Kraut line

15-18 minutes on a 2nd-3rd hybrid rotational line that could be considered a 2nd or a 3rd depending on the night.
PK time on the first unit.
McDavid Factor.
New management factor (Rieder's playing style suits Chia's prefence as mentioned before).
And he would definitely have the same role(s) 2-3 years down the road.
if there ever is something that could be predicted in a hockey forum, it would be this. The timing, factors in play, and our RW scenario aligns everything quite nicely for us.
