No need for him in Ottawa, no budget dollars either. Management has already said they want to see chabot in camp before they add a stop gap anyways. |

If you want to upgrade your top line though, I believe that Adam Larsson could be had if you were willing to part ways with Taylor Hall |

I'd need Lucic with Larsson to make that deal work... |

I wish Calgary had a better option in their top 4 ! Calgary is very thin in the minute munching Dman department. |

NJ's defense is in a pretty interesting position right now. Andy Greene could pull a Girardi/Boychuk and start declining out of nowhere, and besides Severson, I'm not sure you guys have anybody else I'd trust eating 20+ minutes a night.
Lovejoy to me is always criminally underrated, but still nothing more than a 2nd pairing defenseman.
Do you guys have any prospects that have high ceilings? |

EK he has bad fancy stats, hes barely considered a human being let alone a saga. I laughed pretty hard when stats people were comparing Russell to Scuderi. |

Don't worry. According to Ek all defensemen are going to NJ.

Sorry my reply feature isn't working.
I thought Russell played quite well in Dallas after coming over after returning from injury.
Arizona has no room at the inn for D, they have 9 on 1 way contracts now & until LTIR issues are addressed limited cap space. |

Russell in his last 3 seasons in Calgary logged over 23 mins of TOI/GP each season. That puts him in pretty elite company against all NHL Dman essentially top 30 by average & by even strength ice time he is even better; top 15, he doesn’t see top flight power play time or he would be even higher in TOI/GP.
Russel against all NHL Dman.
15/16 TOI/GP 23:04 33rd overall, EV TOI/GP 19:37 12th overall.
14/15 TOI/GP 23:56 22nd overall, EV TOI/GP 20:22 10th overall.
13/14 TOI/GP 23:08 37th overall, EV TOI/GP 10:17 13th overall.
By even strength ice time for all NHL Dman he’s been top 15 3 years in a row & top 3 in blocked shots, 1st once, 2nd & 3rd the other 2 due to games missed. He's easily a 2nd pairing top 4 guy. Good skater pretty reliable positionally & plays against the other teams best players regularly.
He would immediately be NJ's 2nd best Dman currently. |

Sorry should read 19:17 in 2013-14 in EV TOI/GP |

All this means is that Calgary's D was severely lacking outside 1 and 2. That's was somewhat addressed by bringing in Dougie, but it still took him half a season to get conformable. Russell's toi does not reflect, in any way, his abilities. He should be on the bottom pair averaging 12ish minutes a night. He has little, to no offence, and is a defensive liability. All he's good for is blocking shots. I will be very disappointed if Calgary signs him. I don't see it happening though. Johnny is top priority. |

In 573 games he sits minus 8; not a perfect stat granted & many of those years were spent playing for a brutal Columbus team. Not all players are there to drive offense. Many just the opposite & solid 2 way Dman are rarer still.
All that even strength icetime means he see's the best of the best regularly & consistently.
I would suggest you go through all 30 teams & look at all Dman. Russell under no scenario is a bottom pairing Dman. NHL.com, stats, players, Dman, more, time on ice sort by TOI in differnet situations. |

Santini and Jacobs look to be future NHLers. But as far as top pairing guys, if Severson doesn't hit his ceiling they are pretty screwed. |

If you believe that Russell is anything but a bottom pairing guy, then there is no sense arguing. You clearly have no clue what you're talking about. |

I'm fairly certain I know what I'm talking about.
Bottom pairing Dman play in or around 13 to 15 minutes a night against the other teams worst players not over 23 minutes a night. They rarely kill penalties or see any PP time with very rare exceptions. They certainly don't finish in the top 35 consistently in TOI/GP for all NHL Dman & the top 15 in EV TOI/GP.
Russell did this with Giordano, Brodie, Wideman & Hamilton also playing for Calgary last season. The 1st 3 the 2 seasons prior. Russell & Wideman were a fixture together as the 2nd pairing in Calgary primarily for those 3 years.
What your comments show is your clueless.
I like you, assuming from your login am a Flames season ticket holder. I also own Edm & Dal season tickets. 3 markets which I work in being in the Petro industry. I watched Russell play for both Calgary & Dallas.
Not sure how your classifying your placement as a 2nd or 3rd pairing Dman but for me it comes down to minutes played. No better way to determine a players value to his respective team, the trust of the coaches, who they face as competition etc.
If your only criteria is offense then perhaps you are correct.
