If he hits a reasonable 40-45, I think management would be in a position to either negotiate a bridge at like 3.5mil for 2 years or they could maybe lock him down for something like 4.75 for 7 years. If he'd take the latter, I'd be all over it as that would do wonders for our cap situation. He helps the team have more space to compete for Cup and would still be a free agent in his prime.

He went 4th overall. A lot of talented players from that draft didn't play much in the NHL either. Sending him down to get ice time with Kelowna seemed to be exactly what his development needed. Draisatl had an amazing run with McDavid out. Hall is good buy McDavid is just silly good. He will earn a decent raise no matter what they do with him. He is an amazing defensive zone, high pressure center. A lot of scouts noted, and rightfully so, that he is amazing at bringing that puck up the ice. He is great at changing speed on a rush, going from fast to faster and is great at charging the net.

If he plays top 2 on the wing he is going to put up big numbers. However him playing top 2 looks to be dependent on whether they can grab a bottom 6 center of if Lander some how shows that he might be able to hold that role. Most likely Leon will be put on a third line that sees decent ice time as a shut down line. He is a big guy that can win key faceoffs and add offense. Personally I would put Pulj with him as it would be less pressure for the rookie.

Maroon McDavid Eberle
Lucic RNH Yakipov
Pouliot Draisatl Pulj
Hendricks Letestu Kassian

Obviously you can play with the wings but the top 3 centers all add great two way games and decent (improving) faceoff ability. Letestu can win the puck and add some tempo to go with Hendricks and Kassians speed. Maroon with McDavid because of their chemistry last season but I suspect you can put a pylon on the wing and it would appear to have chemistry with McDavid. He is the third best LW on the team if you go with Pouliot's numbers (see Hendo's blog comparing him to Lucic). Yak with RNH because they really have to see if they can get him going. If he can get some confindence, hold onto the puck and play his game like he did in his rookie year, the Oilers have a deep team.

Either way, Leon is getting a raise. He is still young. It will most likely be a 3 year deal at 4-4.5 (after bonuses). He has tons of time so a bridge deal doesn't really help anyone as they Oilers aren't looking to part with him and he hasn't earned higher than that yet. He will and that is why I think he will be looking at 6 mil if it is a long term deal. Still I think both parties would be better off doing a medium term and see where the cap is and how he has developed.

I would sign RNH's contract again in a heart-beat. Maybe it's just me but I think his IQ and wrister are both under-rated and that he will be a 60+ point C in this league at least once before the end of his contract.
- RonPielep

RNH is underrated by a lot of people but it is not just you. I was looking to compare the young center and numerous sites have him listed high in their rankings. I think RNH, like many other Oilers, had longer injuries because there was no hurry to get him back. When you are not in a cup race, you don't put a player on the ice if he is still injured. Why risk making it worse. With that said, many top teams have players that play injured and still do decent. I think once the Oilers start winning, you will see less games loss to injury. That said, an RNH playing top 2 is going to put up good numbers and I agree that his contract is a good value for both him and the team.

Because at this point with the limited view everyone has had of McDavid, this is simply wishful thinking based on a biased view as an Oilers fan.

Also there is no one at this point on the Oilers that will come even close to commanding the same dollars as Malkin did in Pittsburgh. So why would McDavid take a discount without the same set of circumstances being present, that were in Pittsburgh?

- leonkennedy

Not the same as Malkin but more like Yzerman. He took a pay cut so the wings could sign Selanne and Kariya. McDavid is looking to rebuild this franchise much like he did establishing his team in the minors.

As for limited view? McDavid has been making the news since he was 15. He played early in the minors, early at the worlds and we saw him play this year. It is not a bias or if it is, it is one shared by many prospecting sites. McDavid walked onto the team and became a top 25 player in the NHL as a rookie. He is the type that would do what is best for the team he is on. That is his character and he says it comes from his father and the way he was raised. Will he take a cut? Probably not but only because there's no need. Cap will continue to rise and the Oilers have one of the richest owners in the league.

neither selanne nor kariya ever played for the wings. Yzerman never took a paycut to accommodate them.

Mcdavid will get the brinks truck backed up for him. There'll be no discount. Period

So you think rnh was healthy but the organization held him out cause they were already bad ?
Yeah, no
I mean maybe they held him a couple extra to be sure, which is far from out of the ordinary.
but I don't think there was ever a time in recent memory where they didn't feel icing the best team possible and possible success wasn't paramount for a squad that knew nothing but losing. I actually see this theme with many of your posts. You think the losing isn't a big deal and they'll just turn it around one day as long as we keep getting high picks. I think you fundamentally misunderstand the psychology of losing and team building .

Also, rnh has not only already played top 2, but he's been the 1 guy for multiple seasons and didn't put up huge numbers. He may still, but it's not the deployment that's held him back by any means

I think that is exactly the point. No one knows what Larsson will turn into and us Oiler fans have been down this road with too many dmen already. Nurse, Rienhart, Schultz... They just added another prospect when the team really needed a proven power play quarter back.

As for trading Hall simply for change that is crazy. Lots of first round draft picks didn't take their team to the cup in the first couple years. Ovechkin, Crosby, Kane, Stamkos, Tavares... Their team didn't just suddenly get better but these are all franchise players now and their teams are a lot better after developing them.

I am okay with trading Hall, I just don't think the Oilers got the value he is worth. I think Larsson could have been had at a much lower price and if not I would have rather seen Vatenen, Shattenkirk, Barrie, Brodin.... They didn't have to trade their top producer. They have depth at center and there is need. Or even Eberle would have made more sense.

No matter what Larsson turns out to be, will he ever have the same value as Hall does? Hall is a top 10 two way winger in the game. No way Larsson is ever going to be even a top 20 defender in the league but if he was, its still better to keep your top guy at this point. Everyone sees the Oilers glaring lack of skilled defense but they also aren't putting the puck in the net. You simply have to score and Hall brought that to any line he was put on. He doesn't have to play with McDavid like Maroon does to get points. If NJ was only willing to trade for Hall then look else where. There are still dmen being shopped that are more proven and can be had for less.

I don't know....Chia stated he pounded the pavement...I don't see a NHL Gm just trading his best asset without doing his homework...Eberle doesnt get you what you need IMO...or it would have been him. Larsson's young and already had 5 NHL seasons and has been ranked as the top shot suppressor in the league already...sometimes you need to give up goals, which you're really not when you should have McDavid for a full year and now Lucic too...they hopefully make up for a few...but even better, you won't have to score as much if Larsson is as good as his stats suggest. 23 and has played 5 years in the NHL so far...I'd wait before you say he won't be a top 20D...plus it's easier to keep the puck out of the net then to score.

Not at all the answer I was expecting. I may have to revise my impressions of you.

P.S. A wee bit of avocado really would add some nice texture to said smoothie.

Revise in a good way or bad way ?

I've never been a fan of avocado. When I make sushi at home I like to sub cucumber in place of avocado.

Not bad.
Sushie and smoothies instead of coffee and garlic sausage. I have totally miscast you LittleRicky.

Its kinda funny how one pictures other posters just by going on their choice of avi's and the manner in which they post.
