so, this blueline:
McDonagh-Klein
Skjei-Mcilrath
Staal-Girardi
Holden-Clendening
Graves...
I've been consistently dismissive of the Rangers intentions to trade for Shattenkirk, but, if I play along for a moment, how will they make that work?
Unless McIlrath or Klein would go back to St Louis in a larger package, this blueline appears to be what we can expect to start the season.
Graves in Hartford, maybe both Holden and Clendening here as the 7th and 8th D-men, because I don't know if Clendening can pass through waivers (maybe he would anyway)
this team needs a top pairing right handed defenseman to play with Mcdonagh or it doesn't need another defenseman at all |

Just as you said Jimbo, McIlrath or Klein would have to go back. |

Klein and Zuuc (maybe have to throw in a pick) bring back a top pair to play with Mac.
Or
Klein and Fast/Lindberg bring back a second pairing guy
Then buy out G and hope Staal can turn it around this year or you eat some money/package a prospect and move him |

I have a hard time seeing any team downgrading a top pairing guy to a Klein, even if Zucc comes back as well. I'd guess it's Skjei that needs to go if we're talking a bonafide proven top pairing guy. |

I honestly think the Rangers should see what they have in Girardi or Staal before making any blockbuster moves. They need to find out if these guys can get back to form or if they are truly on the steep decline. |

Well depending on the situation of the team theyre trading with but ya you're probably right. That package with a good pick would have to bring back something pretty good though.
Idk probably should be patient and see what happens with Shatty next offseason |

Ya like jimbo said I think this is the group they are taking into the season. Girardi wont be dealt with till the offseason.. Staal could be traded still this summer or this season if they found a team looking for D help and wanted to eat some of his contract |

I didn't mean trade them. I meant making a blockbuster trade to incorporate with them on the D core. I think we should see how this D core looks to start the year before we do anything, unless a trade is there that is just to nice to pass up. |

Pretty sure no big trade for D will be made before the season starts unless it's a move that Gorton can't refuse. (cue the Godfather gif)
We'll see what happens by the deadline if Staal or G are looking like last year, otherwise try to sign Shatty after we win the cup this year. |

isn't he from Boston? went to Harvard so that's where I am getting that. good for him though. I loved Moore, heart and soul guy. we need more players like that on the team. he brought it every game. - richardson30
No. He is Canadian (that's why we need more like him!). From Sarnia, Ontario. |

Ah. If there was a trade on the D it better be for one of those guys |

No. Not a Homer. If that was the case I would be in eternal suffering as either a Sabres or Maple Leafs fan.
Just love the way the Canadian game is played. The American game is very similar, just often lacking the "do whatever it takes" edge. I don't know, maybe you guys have too many other areas to take (sports) pride in. We just have hockey. |

G and Staal both have NMC... so neither will be traded... why would either of them want to be traded? the only option for either is a buyout - which should be a LAST resort. the best option is to change the D system to a zonal system and hope that G and Staal go back to their old selves. |

buyout talk is over til next June anyway
forget about the money they make, Staal and Girardi could be a decent 3rd pair if they can stay healthy this year |
