I was pretty clever when deal was initially made that I didn't like giving him up |

I don't know how anyone could know if he's a better prospect than Kovacs, Gropp, Stromwall...but I guess we'll find out |

Hey does anyone know the answer to this - for the expansion draft, if you sign a RFA or pending UFA - does that contract's terms go into effect before the expansion draft? for example - Pittsburgh with Murray, if they sign him with a NMC in his contract, would that allow Pitt to protect him? |

I think any new contract extension for the following year doesn't begin until July 1st, so even if they signed an extension with a NMC, it wouldn't be in effect during the expansion draft, because that will be in June |

Well, Kovacs has played all of 8 games in Sweden's top league, whereas Saarela had played almost 50 Games in the top Finnish league before he was 18. |

It was just the dumbest (frank)ing trade. People complain about the MSL trade or the Yandle trade, I would still take those any and everyday over the E Staal trade. |

The Rangers drafted Kovacs before Sarella, so at least in their eyes, he was a better prospect. But, this all comes down to a projection of what you think the player can be, not what they are when they are 17-18 years old. There are some players that tear up Juniors, but just can't make the pro transition. I am assuming the same is probably true with the good European leagues.

I don't know. Most second rounders have a less than 50% of chance of even becoming NHLers. So, you give up a couple of second round picks, I don't think it kills you, and you can supplement elsewhere.
While Duclair isn't my favorite player, you can make the argument that he has high end potential, so I think that hurts more than giving up a couple of non first round picks.
But, I do realize that the Rangers draft well after the first round, as evidenced by the fact that Duclair and Buchnevich were both 3rd rounders, so there is an argument to be made the other way as well.
I still don't sweat the Staal trade much. It just didn't work out.

Yeah its not that I sweat it Pete, its that it was so (frank)ing unnecessary that bothers me. At least the Yandle/Duclair one was to fill a need and Yandle while not very good at actual defense put up decent numbers and doesn't belong in a Jazzy. |

Just think if the Rangers went the opposite direction -- traded Yandle at the deadline and didn't acquire Staal. It would have been the opposite of taking their shot, but in hindsight, we would have a bunch more prospects/picks in the coffers.
But a deal like Vesey makes up for some of this. Maybe he doesn't sign unless he sees that the Rangers have a need to replenish the pool of young players.

I agree. I would happily give up 2nds and lower level prospects than 1st round picks. other than McIlrath we have done pretty well of late with 1sts - Miller, Kreider, Skjei.

I was hoping they were going to do that.
Interesting point though about Vesey. Although I would have hoped they stockpiled picks if they went that way. |
