Sorry, I am not on the Hartnell bandwagon. 34yrs old, signed for 3 more years at 4.75M/yr, NMC. I like the type of player but not his age and contract.
- Symba007

His and Emelins cap hit are almost identical... with Weber, Petry, Pateryn and Redmond on the right side, the Habs can subtract Emelin without even affecting the blue line much! Hartnell will still score 20+ goals and bring a big, annoying body to the 2nd line and really round out the top 6

You forgot McCarron
- Symba007

Could not find a spot for him, but I would like to see him in mtl. Pretty sure a guy like Andrighetto has a one way deal.

Trade Emelin for Hartnell

Galchenyuk with Pacioretty and Radulov
Plekanec with Gallagher and Hartnell
McCarron with Shaw and Carr

- obie

McCarron will play in St-John, and so will Sherback.
Next year they'll be ready, or at the TDL.

Emelin plays on the left side, but I get your point. He could go.

Cause Hartnell would provide the habs with way more of what they actually need than Emelin would for almost the same cap hit

To each his own... Emelin is almost irrelevant on the blue line at a fairly high price tag... you will get top 6 value out of Hartnell for at least 2 of those remaining 3 years

Hartnell has a NMC, Emelin has a limited NTC with 10 teams he won't go to. Odds are even if both teams would agree, one of the 2 players won't.

odds are Emelin has Columbus on his NT list, rumour is he has already refused a trade in the past when he had a NMC, not sure where he was supposed to go.

He may find himself the odd man out on the blue line in Montreal, so ultimately he'll have to choose between playing or not playing more than anything else

Emelin is not that bad, it's just that he's overpaid for a 3rd pairing dman. Money they could use for a legit 2nd line LW. (or a partner for Weber)
I'm not crazy about Hartnell, but let's face it, that's probably the best return they could get for Emelin...

Exactly... ideally I'd love JVR or Simmonds to play on the left side but those guys are either not available or would cost core pieces to acquire, Hartnell is obviously a short term solution but would bring the same kind of attributes and would cost next to nothing. You're right, Emelin is not that bad and that's why Columbus would most likely be interested in this deal as well... but from the Habs point of view, playing Barberio instead of Emelin on the 3rd pairing is not really a drop off at all but putting Hartnell on that 2nd line is an obvious upgrade

I would rather package Emelin with picks and prospects to get someone younger and faster. Like Kreider. Or some similar type of player.

But the Rangers have no interest in trading Kreider... especially not for spare parts...

Don't have to be him, that type of player. Size and speed.
I'm afraid Hartnell isn't fast enough anynore, and it won't get any better.

Hartnell's game has never been about speed... he screens the goalie, tips pucks in and capitalizes on rebounds, always hard to handle around the net and generally a pain to play against... with little cap space and very little valuable assets to part with Hartnell for Emelin would be a steal for Montreal
