Wel then, i guess we will be right up against the 50 contract limit.

Edit: i can't see the leafs graduating those guys to the ahl and leaving marner behind in the ohl. I will be shocked if he's not with the leafs.

- Tumbleweed

Any player who is signed counts. Doesn't matter where they play. OHL, Sweden, my beer league, whatever. But that said, the 50 contract limit is not a concern. We are at 48 contracts which means we still have 2 spaces and there's nobody left to sign. Prust and whatever his face on the PTO are not making the team.

There will be players traded before the season starts. Either that or a couple of the vets/young players will be claimed off of waivers.(some will clear waivers..looking at you Michalek) If guys like Leivo or Corrado don't make the roster Lou will attempt to trade them for late picks instead of losing them to waivers.(see Joe Colborne for a 4th rounder)

am i the only person who is kinda hoping the cowen is NOT bought out, comes back pissed (and works his butt off) and proves Lou wrong, and becomes the top D he was projected to be on draft day?

I wasn't trying to prove or disprove some other point, except you said player's were gift wrapped spots.

i said they weren't. they were actually won by the young players themselves. if the team had more depth and better players then that wouldn't have been the case.

no one handed the spot and said it's yours to lose. these guys beat out whoever the fringe NHL'r was that could have won that spot.

- kaptaan

Again, the nucks didn’t have veteran nhl players to fill those roster spots, so Virtanen and mccann were given nhl jobs they didn’t earn. Benning had no other options.

But sure, Virtanen and mccan’s combined 16 goals scream nhl ready.

exactly how people before the year started thought Corrado would win a spot, but he didn't and was beaten out by Hutton.

Corrado was eventually waived and is still a fringe player if that.

Corrado isn't worth it. Rather have the pitas and pints...

fair enough, Im gonna take this deal over to Bergevin. Il be right back with food and beer

Incorrect. 18 and 19 year old players playing in the chl with signed nhl contracts do not count.

from last blog comments...

none of those guys were gift wrapped spots. slick willie didn't want any young players in the lineup, but he had no choice when Horvat won a spot and the following season Canucks didn't have enough depth to deny Virtanen and McCann who admittedly could have used time in Junior/ AHL but were good enough to make the team.

not sure why your team would need Prust unless it's to add team toughness, but that just means a younger player is going to have his spot taken...

- kaptaan

It's a PTO....they didn't sigh him to a contact he's coming to the training camp. It makes a lot of sense the rookies got to earn a spot. It won't be hard winning it over Prust but none the less. Glencross and Stetiguchi were invited last year and didn't make the team. It's not a big deal stop trying to creat drama out of nothing.

Fixed.

And not quite the same...

- lumlums

that's how these things usually go.

the history is with the city and its residents. i'm sure the victories by the Toronto Arenas, Toronto St. Pats are still stanley cup victories that accrue to the city of Toronto. The NHL team should I feel buy the rights to those teams and consolidate that history if possible for the people of the city. However, the best option would be if another team was awarded a franchise in Toronto and that team and organization bought the rights to those earlier teams and then used that legacy themselves.

The point was the person said no Vancouver player had their name on the cup which is patently false.

I kind of want to see him get a shot here under Babs before cutting him loose too.

The d-man the leafs added, Hraberenka....he looked pretty decent in the AHL prior to last season and in his 1 NHL game. I'm not sure wtf happened to him last year other than possibly injuries catching up to him or something. He may surprise some in training camp if he plays like the guy from a few seasons ago.

He has about as good a chance as Lupul does at getting 60 points again. The guy dosnt deserve to make anything this year. He's not a NHL caliber player. If you don't work you don't get paid.

i already said they could have used junior/ ahl experience.

Virtanen and McCann competed against whoever was available in the organization. they weren't handed the spots. it's unfortunate there wasn't better competition available but you can't blame Benning for his predecessors leaving the cupboards empty. He's working within the limits of the cap and the personnel available at the time.

So again, no, they weren't handed the spots.

i'm saying they won the spots against inferior competition. You keep saying they were handed the spots. if the team could have had better competition, then they would have given the spots to those other players. the management and the coach, slick willie, didn't want to give them the spots. couldn't help it when they actually won them on merit (albeit against fringe players).

Interesting historic tidbit: the Vancouver Millionaires were the first players to have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup (although in previous years, some guys had scratched their names on).

And I guarantee that if the Leafs bought the legacy of another team, there'd be uproar about it, mainly among your board.

The other difference is that the Arenas, St. Pats and Maple Leafs are the same franchise, whereas the millionaires folded, and much later on a new franchise took off in Vancouver.

probably why they decided to just spend the extra bucks on engraving the names on the cup instead...
