The Florida-Coyotes deal shows why the Rangers will never be able to trade a Girardi or Staal. We can't afford to give up top prospects lol - TPC
Honest question:
If you were the GM and a team called and said we'll take Girardi with no money retained but you have to send Vesey and a 2nd rounder along with him...would you do it?
Would you do it if it were Girardi and Buchnevich? |

Can't. Not the way the Rangers are built currently. |

So you wouldn't do either?
I get not doing it with Buchnevich, but it would seem silly to not move Vesey to rid yourselves of Girardi's putrid, well...everything. |

I would wait a year, but that comes with its risks too. Vesey sucks and Girardi gets worse.
Its a tough call, but I'm ok with the team right now and the moves they made this summer. |

Yeah I don't think they made any bad moves this summer, just would go a long way towards being able to do business, getting Girardi's $5.5M off the books. $2.5M in cap space now would turn into $8M after he's gone. If they were somehow able to get someone to take Nash at some point in the next two years, they could add major improvements. |

there is this sentiment these days that European prospects are all going to turn into the next big thing, and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that they always seem to have great possession numbers. Definitely tied to Corsi. - jimbro83
Expectations for him aren't huge. Think he might be able to grab a spot as a 4th line C but he probably won't be on the team for another year or two and, probably, tops out as a 3rd liner.
He's got a lot of guys to leap-frog and the team is really young as it is. |

I think thats going to be decided this coming year. Gorton pretty much said as much. Think they are going to see where Girardi is at after the injuries last year and if anything they will buy him out next year. Rangers just can't give away prospects that are close to making the team. |

Rangers are desperate for young talent, they can't afford to trade top prospects. Teams like Florida are able to do it cause they are deeper in the prospect pool |

This Coyotes GM is actually pretty damn savvy. Hell of a trade for the Yotes. |

Florida isn't that deep for prospects anymore, but they're pretty confident that their current young core can continue to grow. They've got a few years before they have to worry about their prospects now. |

Yea a lot of the recent ones have graduated to the big team. But they have time now to afford to make a few moves like this. |

True, Meanwhile Arizona is now in danger of going over the cap.
They're at about $70 million in cap spent, but they have about $6.9 million in potential bonuses this year. |

Unpopular opinion:
I'm really not impressed by anything Florida does, typically. I think some of their prospects/young players are grossly overrated, and really nobody on that team impresses me outside of Barkov and Ekblad. I think they get a lot of positive coverage for three reasons:
- The majority of media/bloggers that cover hockey are, at the very least, somewhat supportive and outspoken about analytics and FLA is a team that openly embraces them. (This isn't a commentary on analytics, just a reason I think they receive a ton of positive coverage)
- It's "cool" to support a team that has been unpopular for an exceedingly long time
- They are very active, in making trades/signings. Which I think a lot of people like to see, despite it not necessarily being correlated to success.
I'm not saying they suck, they obviously have a nicely balanced team, but I just don't have the same "Oh, FLA is going to be a major Cup-contender for a long time" view that so many people seem to have. |

I'm more inclined to say this now, in the hopes that some people don't think my opinion was based on the fact that he was a Ranger:
I think Keith Yandle is a putrid professional hockey player (relative to the money he has made) and I think the contract FLA gave him was laughably terrible.
I think the Reimer signing was a tremendous waste of money
Not a clue why they acquired Reto Berra also
Demers signing was way too long. Decent price though. Kind of a headscratcher when you have really talented young guys like Matheson (Who looked really strong in the playoffs) and, to a lesser extent, McCoshen waiting to take a full-time job
Plus their new Penn State logo and soccer jerseys are possibly the worst in the entire league. Not relevant, but might as well get it out while I'm already doing this.

if they just cleared all this cap space out to sign Kucherov to an offer sheet then I'll be impressed
