One of the rules of the expansion draft is that all teams must make available a defender that has played 40 games in 2016-2017 or 70 games from 2015-2017. Pateryn and Barberio are a stretch to make that list as they are bound to split time this season unless injuries occur. Plus, they are cheap commodities so not really who they want to expose. Beaulieu fits that criteria perfectly if he doesn't pan out next to Weber. But if he does, he's the logical third D being protected so Emelin has to go...

Can they leave a player with a NMC unprotected in an expansion draft?

I doubt he'd get claimed.
- stormey

While I get that he's a bottom-pairing guy that projects as not much more than that bottom pair, he'd be exactly who I'd be lining up if the chance was given to me. Vegas has to pick up a certain number of guaranteed contracts to keep them from going UFA crazy. This is a low salary guaranteed NHL contract that will fill a need and still plenty of cash to go after UFAs.

Not unless said player waives his NMC. In the case of Emelin, it's limited to begin with. Bergevin can say, give me your list. Vegas isn't on list, he can be exposed. Vegas is on list, then he can trade player to protect someone else.

One year, 4M? Not that bad a deal to try out a player for a year...

Habs would but they have too many D that will need protection from said draft.
And in that position, price is likely to be dirt cheap.

ok. that's great and i'm glad you like him. i (frank)ing hate his guts with a blinding passion. never said i like monotone. but i do hate over the top, unprofessional jerk offs that have a schtick when they call the game. it's like listening to a prop wrestling match.

so you don't have to tell why i hate him. i have a litany of reasons. thanks tho!

4m is a large sum of money for what Emelin now brings to the table.

Remember when he was physical?

Plus it's for one year, then your team can negotiate him down from that if he fits...

Montreal and Toronto are two teams with whom many claim to have connections. I have learned to ignore most of them because their connection is either unreliable or just involves one or two people within the organization who themselves are not usually privy to anything on the inside. This source is VERY tuned in. This sounds interesting. I will have an update later today as this develops.
