Earn a spot over a known name. I know the mantra coming from the Leafs brass is that no player will get special treatment, but when a kid sees a legit NHLer competing for the same spot rather than another prospect it may help to motivate that kid further.

That's a fair statement. I was thinking more the Rychel's and Soshnikov's that will be at camp.

I figure it's better to show faith in the young guys you want in those spots and give them the opportunity to show you they can play there rather than making them try to beat out a guy you don't really want on your team anyway.

I kind of disagree. I think gift-wrapping roster spots for players can cause complacency. I believe that is part of what's hindered the success in Edmonton.
