As the Toronto Maple Leafs were the first North American team (in any sport) to retire a number, we don't need to take poop from anyone.

I actually like the current system: numbers only retired for guys whose careers were tragically cut short.

All others are honoured.

Interesting little footnote: when the Leafs first started honouring numbers, the current player wearing the number would have a shoulder patch of a maple leaf with the name of the honoured player stitched onto it (I'll see if I can google up a pic).

Of course, the NHL eventually put a stop to it, because they didn't want differentiation in jerseys. Yeah, great.

But I like the idea of the honoured jersey. If Marner wanted to wear the #93, great, but here's the thing, kid: you need to live up to it.

It's a great way of using the history of the club. Unfortunately, it seems like the Leafs now won't give out any recently honoured numbers - nobody will wear 17, 93 or 13.
