It is an argument that will never end. There are without a doubt people that drive recklessly, but it is proven that the result of someone blocking the left lane is more dangerous than someone speeding. That is really where the argument begins and ends for me. If there is a spot to get over, then do it. People try so hard to keep someone behind them and in general people are just awful to each other on the road.
There are plenty of cars that are capable of driving safely at speeds over 70 miles per hour on the road. You can make an assumption, but you really don't ever know how important those extra 3-5 minutes are to someone. Doubt it is worth anyone's life but I see plenty of people trying to "police" things themselves. There really isn't any harm in letting someone who you feel is driving recklessly go past you.
I think anyone would be lying if they say they haven't been involved in some form of road rage at some point in their life...I try to stay out of that as much as possible. I was really just angry that these people ruined my morning, not that I didn't get somewhere as quickly as I wanted to. - YuenglingJagr
Any time that I see someone driving like that, I'll let them pass me, and hopefully get far, far away from me. I've got no interest in being cooler than them, they can pass me and be king of the road for all I care. But I do agree. Best example from last week:
I see 2 cars doing about 90 coming down the right lane (I was in the left) where Car B is riding Car A's ass. They come zooming up, cut into my lane (I didn't have time to get into the right lane). Car A then gets into the right lane after speed-matching the truck for about a mile. Finally, Car A passes the truck and gets into the right. Car B zooms up, passes Car A, then cuts over into the right lane and slams on his brakes. Car A swerves into the left lane, only for Car B to do the same thing. This happened 3 times before Car B proved his point.
Now, both cars are to blame, and Car A obviously did something to Car B. But really, this is playing with lives; not only their own, but everyone else's on the road. Is it really worth being 1 spot ahead, or tailgating, or exceeding speed limits by 25 MPH (they're there for a reason), or blocking people? Now, if I'm in the left doing 70 to pass cars in the right doing 60, then the cars behind me are gonna have to wait, and I'll gladly pull to the right when I've passed, and they can have fun doing 85 the moment I change lanes (actually, they'll almost hit me because they'll accelerate as soon as I start to change). I just don't get what the big deal is. Drive your car, get to your location, and it's okay (generally) if you're a few minutes late. If it's not, then plan accordingly so that being a few minutes late makes you a few minutes early.
Last week I saw an SUV on 95 during rush hour lean so far towards the construction barrier, as it did a 2 lane slide to the right, that I swore we were going to have a 20 car pileup. Thankfully it stayed on all four wheels and we all kept on our way.
I hate driving that road when it starts to back up because you know someone is going to be an ignoramous and try to do the weave through it. - dragonoffrost
Yeah, but that probably shaved 4 seconds off of his hour-and-a-half drive home. Plus, he's way important than you and everyone else who was on the road at the time.

It probably saved him no time. But it cost him a set of underwear I'd say.
The internet just got me with a swift kick to the stones...had a terrible commute into work with two school buses parked in the left lane going about 3-5 mph faster than traffic in the right lane and too much traffic to safely pass in the right. So there I sat drowning in my own misery and turning what is usually an enjoyable part of my day into an awful time. I got the bus numbers and was going to look up some local bus companies (quick google search) and then an advert comes up for one of them here on hockeybuzz....Damnit targeted advertisements and damnit eklund - YuenglingJagr
Also, just curious: if it was a car in the left lane doing 3-5 MPH more than the right lane because he wanted to do 68-70 instead of 65, would you feel the same way?

Sadly, it probably didn't. He's a great driver, he can do things that would cause other people to crash. Not him, he's the king of the road. - jmatchett383
Oh he was ghost white when I passed him shortly thereafter...

Once dash cams become standard then this sort of thing will hopefully die down. Police are starting to crack down on left lane squatters and states are also slowly increasing the speed limit. Some of the roads are not designed to handle the amount of traffic that they are forced to handle and it creates these situations, but a lot of it just comes down to people being distracted or just plain disrespectful to each other.

I can't speak for all the Morin voters there, but the general expectation is he'll be playing a significant number of NHL games this season. In the #4 poll the votes were 98 for Morin, 62 for Rubtsov and 11 for Myers. - Feanor
I'd say a bunch probably think he's playing as soon as someone gets hurt. Cause we all know if Provorov makes the team someone's being dealt. *cough* Streit *cough*

Slightly confused by the question, but yes...there should never be a time where you just set your cruise to slightly faster than the right lane and act like you aren't doing anything wrong. If there are cars behind you, make your pass and get over

keep right, pass left is all i ask - aightwebang17
It is the law in the great state of Pennsylvania.
If I'm in the left lane I keep up with traffic. If someone is on my ass and I'm already cruising at a good speed I do get over when I have the chance to let them pass.

You should not be in the left lane at all unless you are passing someone.

Law of most states. But also probably the most ignored law other than seat belts and speed limits themselves.

I don't think Pennsylvanians understand this. - aightwebang17
PA isnt even the worst, but there is a severe breakdown in the rule once there is a lot of traffic. Everyone speeds up when you try to get into another lane so people counteract that by just never changing lanes....it is mankinds greatest accomplishment

Let me rephrase, I'm in the left lane cruising and passing people and if someone is on my ass while doing this I find a spot to get in the right lane, let him pass, and then get back in the left when I'm ready to pass someone.

I do drive in the right lane when not passing. - Streit2ThePoint

I drive 202, 76 and the turnpike every week day. It's an insane asylum. I can come up with at least one slightly crazy event each drive.
I was passing a semi this morning in the far left of three lanes. Two cars came barreling up behind me, the front one flashing his headlights. He got so close I couldn't see the grill of his car with another car right on his ass. Since the headlights didn't work he started laying on the horn. Now where the hell am I supposed to go here? I have a semi on my right and a car in front of me, we're passing at a decent clip but not at 95mph. I got over as soon as I had a chance but I could see this guy raging behind me the entire time. When he passed he pulled right in front of me and nearly clipped my front end.

flashing of the headlights gives me road rage.
It shouldn't because I don't know their situation, but for some reason it makes me want to drive slower.

You are partially wrong. PA is a commonwealth.
Partially though. You are still technically correct as it is part of the united STATES of America. You are not fully wrong, and are partially right. Rest assured your legacy remains intact.

But like you said, there wasn't room to get over in the right.
Basically, if I want to do 70, and the right lane is doing 65, and there is suitable space for me to pull into the left lane without cutting anyone off, I'm gonna do it. As soon as I have made my pass, I will switch to the right lane.
