I used Edmonton because that is his team. Not as a deflection.

You can use any team, except Detroit.

Welshy just articulated his point a lot better, which I agreed with.

Fair my apologies.

As you might be able to understand, often people respond to a non-threading comment with some irrelevant 'well your team (frank)ed up here too' so that was kinda how I interpreted it.

But yeah if you were just trying to prove how worthless third rounders can be I'm well aware which is why in my first post I stated that taking the risk was a non-issue.

I get his whole right to choose, but his choice leaves me wondering how driven he is to win.

I'm not blaming him. I'm also not giving him credit for coming in last in the Vesey sweepstakes by being the only one giving up a pick in the process. Eventually those things need to work once in a while.
- sbroads24

Nobody is giving him credit for not getting him. We're giving him credit for having the balls to go after him. There is a difference. I really don't know how you get last place on Vesey. We could've been 2nd, or we could've indeed been last. We don't know, yet you're talking like it's a certainty just because he gave up a 6% chance to get a near certain roster player.

sabres actually had five third-rounders this year

--they picked two players
--one went to nsh in the Vesey trade
--one went to fla in the kulikov trade
--one went to Pittsburgh as compensation for Buffalo hiring a coach the pens fired (try to figure that one out)

Nice player sure but he's not exactly gonna light the place on fire.
- zdp1189

Stamkos stayed in Tampa and he might not be a game breaker but Okposo was arguably the best option after Stamkos and he wanted to come here

Believe me I very much like okposo as a player, but it's not like its some huge signing that's gonna get other FA's to want to come play in Buff. But it certainly is a start.

We easily got the best FA this year. The only year he actually tried to sign anybody good.

Yeah lots of people have brought this up but I don't think that makes a third rounder any more or less valuable. I agree the value is not high, but I don't see how having multiple of them makes it lower. Does this also make the rest of the Sabres later picks less valuable? The value is in the draft position.

But I do understand how teams might try to low ball you if they think you have assets to burn. The goal should be not to let them.

Again, similar to how the Oil were likely low balled with Hall due to their extra F assets.

I like he went after him too. People are missing my point. It's great to be involved, or "in" on everyone. But that will get old fast if we never are the team that lands anyone.

It isn't just a Murray issue. Toronto has the same issue

Indeed. If it was an assistant that was still on staff, sure I get that, but a guy you're paying to not work for you is so @ssbackwards.

We can only sign so many contracts (50), we had 11 total picks, 4 in the 3rd round, the pick is a non-issue. Murray took a very minor gamble to get out front of the rest of the NHL to take a shot at a potential top 6 LW, which is exactly what we need. Unfortunately, Buffalo will never be NYC, and we didn't have his lifelong buddy on our team (sounds like he is really tight with the Hayes family). He could have chosen better teams, but wanted the Rangers, somewhat similar to Stamkos, and him leaving money on the table to stay in T.B. (another thing you like to blame Murray for). We were on Vesey's short list according to Vesey's agent. So...Okposo was the big fish FA after Stamkos, he's here. Any free agent is going to come with a big price tag, and everybody knows that our owner has deep pockets, so big money will continue to be a given, it's just the nature of the situation.

Sbroads man you're like a literate version of GERBE sometimes. Always on the edge of "everything is so bad". Time to let the Myers/Bogo thing go, let the 3rd rounders go, etc. Sun is coming out tomorrow and we still have good young talent. It's not like our windows closing because of anything Murray has done.

Again, is the bar set at "As long as he doesn't royally f*ck us, it's all good"??

Can only have 50 signed contracts. We picked 17 players the last 2 seasons . an more to sign so it was a option to maybe gain a possible good player that the 3rd pick was a far sure thing.

perhaps I should put it this way...

from 2012 to 2016 the buffalo sabres had 16 first and second round picks and a boatload more in the lower rounds...there are only 50 professional contracts allowed per season

wadr...taylor hall has nothing to do with the fact that tim murray went into the draft with a cupboard full of prospects and four third-round picks, one of which he decided to use on vesey
