Thing is, all a schmuck like me had to do was ask the one friend I had with a league contact if Vesey would sign with the Sabres and the answer I got was NO. Why? Because the kid passed on Nashville because he wanted "bright lights and a big stage".
If I could find that out in late June, how come GMTM couldn't find that out before trading our 3rd away?
Somewhere here or in GARTH's blog I posted the "bright lights and big stage" quote back in June. I'm not going to bother looking for it, so you'll have to take my word for it. - Losman
Yeah, except Toronto is arguably even bigger and brighter. LA is the glitziest place on Earth.
He just picked the best team close to mommy. That's it. If you're good, you get paid. Bottom line. |

I think cabin beat you to it.
This argument that his hands were tied due to contracts doesn't make a lot of sense if he goes ahead and uses picks in the later rounds.
If you can't see the parallels in my analogy then I will make it simple for you. Both teams were loaded with a certain type of asset and received a lesser return for that type of asset. At least that's the justification people use to explain why their GMs sold said asset for pennies on the dollar.
The magnitudes of value in each analogy however are not in the same universe. Burn on me. - RonPielep
never said his hands were tied due to contracts...and where did pennies on the dollar come from?
he had four third-round picks in the 2016 draft, 12 overall...he decided to send one of them to Nashville for the opportunity to woo Vesey...
how does that equate to hall being sent to new jersey for what truly amounted to pennies on the dollar? |

Sorry, pennies on the dollar was my attempt at being generous. What would have been more correct is spending an asset on a risk and receiving absolutely nothing in return.
Kinda like if Larsson were to turn around and jump to the KHL |

I was wondering if the Trolls were Trolling the other teams that lost out on Vesey or just the Sabres. |

The guy is from Boston, went to Harvard and just had one of the biggest, overblown former 3rd round pick FA 5 month shows in NHL history after snubbing Nashville because their Broadway isn't big enough for him. In hindsight you had it nailed in June. |

not even close...hall and Larsson are known nhl quantities with hall being a first overall pick and Larsson being the fourth-overall
the third round pick and Vesey--a former third-round pick himself --are nhl unknowns...and based upon how third-rounders usually pan out, it was a low-risk gamble |

I know, we should all be thrilled not landing another potential player.

Vesey is close friends with New York forward Kevin Hayes, a former Boston College player who signed as a college free agent with the Blueshirts in 2014 after spurning the Chicago Blackhawks.
“The thing that jumped out to me was they really wanted me and really needed to have me in their lineup,” Vesey said of the Rangers in a conference call with New York reporters Friday night.
If this kid couldn't see how much the Sabres wanted him, college has done nothing for him. |

darcy was all about potential...he always said we'd be real good...eventually...kinda never happened...
it was a third-round pick for chrissakes...it's not like we traded a bonafide young stud and former first-overall pick for a potential first-pairing d-man, as some would have us believe

Anyways I said the assets were in a different universe of value.
And I agree, it was a low cost gamble. poopty that it didn't pan out but whatever. All I disagree with are some of the justifications people use to sleep better at night. |
