I'm disappointed. There's no such thing as too many lottery tickets, and Vesey would've just been another one, obtained for free, at no negative cost regardless of whether or not he busted.

However I'm also not surprised, and considering how poor I think the Rangers choice is, I'm more convinced then ever that his decision was based solely on whether or not a team would guarantee him a NHL spot and 15+ minutes.

The Leafs were never going to do this, and it doesn't surprise me the others didn't either. The Rangers are on the downswing so really they have nothing to lose, and they desperately need prospects of any kind.

The funny thing is, in the last couple of years that have pointedly not even tried to sign a lot of big UFAs, they've said as much.

When they're good, significant players will sign there. They will be able to sign UFAs when they are in a position to need them. Right now they can't, but they don't need to.

We'll have to make do with the consolation prize of first overall.

I think in all this we're downplaying a key point: LOL at the Sabres for throwing away a draft pick on Vesey. That's pretty sweet to laugh at.
