There isn't a scenario I see where Winnipeg takes anything less than an overpayment for Trouba. Young Dmen cost a premium.
Stay the course. Continue to draft blue chippers. Thought the Brass would have focused more on D this past draft but obviously they thought better of it. Got the goalie instead.
I actually wrote some comments on your blog a few days ago, in that I would hope the Leafs could be knocking on Winnipeg's Door for Trouba.
So im glad you did a write up on this topic.
Personally, I would pursue Trouba over Shattenkirk. Trouba is a bit more of what the Leafs need on their Back-end.
As his overall game improves, I could see him develop into a Duncan Keith type Defenseman.
At 22, he would also fit well with the total developmental stage, the core Leaf players are in. Growing with Rielly could really pay dividends within 2-3 years...when this team is serious in contending for the East.
I could see a deal like this, be in discussion:
o JVR 1989 (LW) (Jets need a Top-End Left Winger)
o K.Kapanen (W) 1996 (Young B Prospect)
o J.Cowan (D) 1991 (could his contract here, and take on Pavelec, as Leafs need a Back-up) FOR
o J.Trouba (D) 1994
o O.Pavelec (G) 1987 (G) (1 yr/$3.9M)
as Jets have Connor Hellebuyck and Michael Hutchinson already in goal
Just something to think about. Would like to hear your thoughts Lucas. - Sandro
not that your trade is not fair but like the Leafs the Jets are not in the market for more forwards when they have so many young top notch forward prospects for those spots. I dont think Trouba will get traded but if he does I can only see it for a top notch young D prospect very close to NHL ready. i dont see one of these in the Leaf's system.

Without stepping on general manager Lou Lamoriello’s toes, Shanahan predicted the Leafs will overcome salary cap challenges in the coming weeks to have room if Vesey signs and to add a needed back-up goalie.
At present, the Leafs are just under the $73 million US NHL maximum, but idled players such as Nathan Horton and Stephane Robidas can once more be shifted off the books to get the needed room for a two-year entry level deal for Vesey and his capped bonuses. Without mentioning Joffrey Lupul and Jared Cowen, who have more than $7 million in space the Leafs are trying to buy out or move, Shanahan said “I’m pretty confident (the cap) won’t be an issue. I’ve got a great GM and (capologist) Brandon Pridham does a great job. We’re very confident we can do everything we want.”
I wouldn't be surprised if leafs want to stay how they are and see how Carrick does before acquiring another dman they would have to protect and lose Carrick in the expansion draft unless they move Gardiner in a deal, which would be sweeeet. - ClarksonDavid
I doubt carick would be picked up in an expansion draft either way. If he has a fantastic season this year the leafs will protect him. If he had an average season or even just a good season the leafs could leave him unprotected and probably wouldn't get picked. LV has to pick one player from each team. After that's done there isn't many picks left and there will be better more proven players available.
