I don't count the last year of Carlyle as rebuild year 1. It really started last summer in my opinion. The Leafs were awful before that but until they fired Carlyle and Nonis, hired Babcock, traded Kessel, drafted Marner, ..... not really rebuilding. Doesn't really matter since they still have several seasons ahead of them in player drafting and development.

Other than Reilly, do you really think there is a Leaf defenceman that would be remotely close to fair value for Trouba ?

Star defencemen do not fall out the sky and are too expensive to trade for at this point. Trouba is good but not a star defenceman.

But at what cost? It's not like we have enough depth else where to take from to fill the d spot without hurting the other area.

Reilly gardiner and hopefully zaitsev works out. Maybe carrick (really impressed with him ) works out to be a regular.

I just don't see the need to rush to get a dman when we don't know what we really have on the back end( Dermott Nielsen might be really solid dman) and still don't know what carrick and zaitsev are.

Plus with the expansion draft coming (only protect 3 dmen) it might be better to wait until next summer and see how the chips fall this year. If Carrick comes good they'll need to protect him, Gardiner and Rielly.

The main point is stressing the word "rush".

They need to continue to draft, develop, and acquire when reasonable. Big trades are not something they should be focused on any time soon. And let's be honest, they have forward talent, but by no means a superior level (not yet proven anyways).
