Yup, unlike Rinaldo, Gudas doesn't take himself way out of position to make a big hit, nor does he constantly take bad penalties for no reason whatsoever.

Also, unlike Rinaldo, he actually learned to improve his game.

I think scared is a bad description. However, what Dmen like Gudas often cause is a forward will rush his play just a bit and perhaps the shot goes wide or the pass is just a bit off. Forwards are aware of guys like Gudas when they are on the ice and they don't want to get crushed by those type of Dmen while in the middle of making a play.

When it comes to "old school" intimidation, you are 100% correct, in the past the Flyers have had MUCH scarier guys than Gudas. However in today's game, intimidation mainly comes from the guys that throw hard punishing hits and Gudas hits as hard as pretty much anyone.

First and foremost, can a guy be an effective player? Intimidation should be secondary. Rinaldo is a guy that players have to be wary of on the ice, but would a good team dress him? Gudas actually played well, it's a benefit that he provides a needed physical element.

Who terrifies opposing players on Chicago's roster? Or LA's? Or Tampa Bay's? Or Pittsburgh?

I'd say Lucic was a guy that you want to give space to on LA. On TB, Brian Boyle is a monster as long as you're under 6'2, then he's terrified of you.

But yes, you don't need a scary/intimidating guy if you have enough skill.

The most important aspect of any team is how intimidating you look getting off the bus. Everything else will work itself out

Again, I think scared/terrified is a misnomer. And, yes, I agree, you don't need a punishing hitter on your blueline to be successful. However, guys like Gudas can make forwards rush their plays now and then, and that's not a bad thing.

Duncan Keith and Tootoo for CHI - Somewhat.
Can't find even a possible on LA, Tampa, Pitts

Pronger and Stevens were great at that. Step towards the guy coming into the zone and they'd make an errant pass.

Exactly. Derian Hatcher often had the same effect as well, especially in the corners. Guys just didn't want to tangle with him.

That's the thing. Guys like Pronger, Stevens and Hatcher ate a lot of ice time and masters at their crafts. Not to mention, bigger than everyone else.

Funny thing is Stevens wasn't bigger. He was listed at 6' and 200lbs which is pretty average even during his career. It was the threat of the elbow being lifted or the launching into you with a shoulder during the hit that made people think.

The other two. Yeah they were beasts.

Yes, but they were also extremely skilled hockey players, 2 of whom are in the HHOF. There's a big difference between guys like them and a guy like Eric Cairns and Bryan Marchment.

Cairns to me wasn't anything. Marchment on the other hand is a straight up Richard!
