I love how an unproven college player fits into the top 6. I've never seen him play, but this kid has put big expectations on his shoulders with all this don't you think?
- Boisy12

100%, brother. Totally agree.

The line in that Tweet where it says "filthy" is laughable.

So Hossa can retire and save on cap? What about the recapture penalty? Is that only if he is traded and then retires? Hossa is still a solid player and I think he'll play past 40. I think he'll become a excellent 3rd line guy.
- kwolf68

In this case, "retire" = "LTIR"

Recapture applies to retirement and trade.

If this happens, you can bet the small market teams will again be in Bettman's ear about the big, bad, nasty, big market 'Hawks again circumventing the cap.

Then again, if Bettman didn't cave in to small market teams going into the '13 CBA, the 'Hawks would not have to 'LTIR' Hossa for an actual 'retirement'; should said 'retirement' occur before the end of '20-'21.

Then why aren't the wings on the hook for their penalty? Datsyuk isn't playing for the yotes and he "retired"

Hossa will be sent to the Sens to be the next player to get his number retired. His big cap hit/low salary is just what the owner wants there.
- powerenforcer

Hossa is 100% retiring and entering the HOF as a a 'Hawk.

Do you guys who are trading Hossa really thing he'll play somewhere other than Chicago for $1MM cash per year?

And if he retires someplace else, Hawks are still on the hook for the recapture.

- StLBravesFan

Exactly---- Hossa retires as a Hawk--- 81 in the rafters-- looks like we will have several new banners in the rafters when 81-2-7-19-88 (4)? retire-- I still think 27 & 28 should have been up there for their service on some very good Hawks teams

Doubtful Vesey will have his number up there-- but he might play a couple seasons here--

He doesn't have to play. He just has to be LTIR'd for a few seasons. His contract might have some value to a team that needs to get to the cap floor, knowing full well he has no intention of playing.

Because Datsyuks contract wasn't subject to a recapture penalty. Hossa and Webers were. Not sure who else.

LTIR means his cap hit wouldn't count, so why wouldn't we keep him then?

Pronger, I believe. At least that's the name most people point to when trying to avoid recapture penalties.

His deal is under the current CBA and there isn't a wide range of annual salary (like Hoss and Duncs) in the contract. Datsyuk annual salaries are 10, 7 and 5.5M. 'Yotes get a $7.5M cap hit. Think the 'yotes are on the hook for most if not all the $5.5M salary.

Add 24 in there for Willie. But that may never happen cuz of the way he left the team.

--------------------------------------------------

Again, I am not sure of the logistics but if Hoss doesn't feel like getting 1M after this year there just might be a way to circumvent the recapture penalty and trade him to a bottom feeder without Hoss ever intending to laced up his skates again (but not officially retire until his contract is up). Sounds too good to be true but I don't know the answer.

It absolutely was subject to penalty. 3 year deal.

Year 1 he was paid 10 mil at 7.5 cap hit.
Year 2 he was paid 7 mil at 7.5 cap hit.

Year 3 retired with Wings having a net 2 mil cap advantage.

Yes Wilson was the best Hawk for many years--- kept them in the discussion-- Didn't he lead the team in scoring as a dman a couple season?

Doesn't matter how much year over year varies to be penalized. All that matters is if you paid the player more than the cap hit over the span of time they were on your team.

Cap recapture penalty is not what you are talking about. Cap recapture penalty was for deals signed under the old CBA that the league deemed as "circumvention" of the cap. That was Weber, Hossa, Pronger. Datsyuk was signed under the new CBA. The Wings would have had to pay the full hit if they didn't trade the contract away. With the cap recapture penalties, teams can not trade away a retired players contract. These are very specific contracts form the old CBA.

Think I read that the KHL team he's playing for is picking up Datsuk's salary.

I'm surprised to hear NYR are a finalist because I read a few days ago that they only got in to the Vesey sweepstakes because NYI and NJD were in on it and didn't want to be criticized for not. Maybe Hayes pushed for it too.

It still seems like the Blackhawks are the best choice. The only reason the kid wouldn't is because he doubts his own ability to secure a top 6 LW role.

I'm curious about Hudler, especially if the Blackhawks can get both of these guys. That would make the top nine interesting and should put the Hawks in contention. It might take some Stan cap magic to make the numbers work.

I wonder What the Blackhawks do if they strike out on both. Maybe they'd
Start the season with what they have and either add players or open up cap space at the deadline depending on how they like their chances.

Peter Donatelli, one of Vesey's agents, says a decision is not likely going to happen today, but should be done this weekend at some point.

Brian Hedger's Twitter feed is full of new info - he talked to one of Vesey's agents:

Just spoke with one of Jimmy Vesey's agents, who says reports of him being down to two teams are completely inaccurate. #Blackhawks

Peter Donatelli, one of Vesey's agents, says a decision is not likely going to happen today, but should be done this weekend at some point.

Donatelli says Vesey and his management group have only met once to discuss the options, yesterday, and will meet again as a group today.

EDIT - more from Hedger
As for report Vesey told #RedWings he wants to be closer to home, Donatelli: "Where he picks will be based purely on a hockey decision."

Donatelli: "In reality, we've had one conversation about the meetings [with teams]. We won't be rushed. It's the right way to do it." #Vesey
