I think that's a fallacy and an outdated view on the game. I'm not a stats lover, nor do I understand the graphs most bloggers use, but I don't believe in this taking liberties idea. If your PP is top 5 (ish) in the league let them whack away.

The current Stanley Cup Champions, don't have anyone to scare people. Trevor Daley or Eric Fehr would be their 'tough' guys.

They beat San Jose in the final. Who on San Jose is coming after you?

What about the conference finalists? Tampa. Are you going to worry about retaliation from Paquette or Brown? Probably not.
Still, they made it far.

The Blues and Ducks can handle themselves but sacrifice that for offensive talent, thus never living up to people's predictions of them.

You don't need tough guys. Tough players in the sense of work ethic and commitment (never say die attitude) but fighters and retaliators? Meh.

Take a punch, get yourself on the PP and put the game away.

Don't get me wrong, it was fun as (frank) watching Orr, McLaren, Mike Brown and Mark Fraser knock ten bells of poop out of the opposition game in, game out, but it didn't solve a thing.

- walshyleafsfan

Yeah cause that usually works in the playoffs......

I am sure you have watched the video of Marchand speed bagging Sedins face .....Embarrassing to have no fight back and it doesn't mean face punching all the time.

This is the biggest thing, if the D can't move the puck up the ice it will effect team scoring. Very interested to see what Larsen can do.
- A_SteamingLombardi

IMO this is the single biggest improvement needed.
More than a marginal improvement will greatly enhance our play.

You are probably right. But if there is one thing we know about WD is that his preferable brand of hockey is running 4 lines. This actually worked beautifully in 2014 and it saved a lot of wear and tear on the Sedins, who finished in top 15 in scoring after the disastrous Torteralla year. If Sutter can center an effective line that plays great defense and can pot a goal here and there. Well, that would be a catalyst for a really good regular season and playoff spot run.
- Rocket_Launcher

Depth & a healthy line-up makes running 4 lines go.
Given both & we stand a good chance at a wild card spot IMO.

I don't think you can discredit the award - make no mistake its the best of the best that get nominated. But honestly look at the list - about 20 of the last 100 nominees over the last 10 years have made the NHL but of those names only Oshie, Atkinson (sort of), Nygvist, Krug, Gaudreau and Eichel have made any significant impact on a game to game basis. Anyways, point is, history has proven the majority of NCAA players don't usually amount to much on the NHL level - and for those reasons plus Vesey being a spoiled little Kok face - I don't understand the legion of boners lined up to sign this kid and promising him top minutes with top players.

Hobey Baker & Heisman college awards hardly translate into Pro success.
Different level of competition hence not readily transferable.

That's fair. As long as you guys do the same.

He'll have to up his game quite a bit though to justify that trade I'd say.

I remember that you guys where very high on McCann. Part of the future core with JV, Demko, BB and a couple of others if I recall.

- walshyleafsfan

Gotta give to get & we lacked a D who could make it tough on big forwards driving the net & manhandling us. Necessary trade more than who was moved.

they've had plenty of opportunity over the years, but insist on continuing to be richard like about it... but hey, i said i'm game if you can make it happen with those two... if not then this board will semi-regularly turn into a shiite show...
- kaptaan

Please just go away for a couple hours, days, years.

A break is needed and you just keep pushing.

It's time to shut it down.

I'm flagging anything that you post that is negative, I'll bold the parts that arn't kosher to me.

In this case it is threatening to bring down the board, including but not limited to bypassing the auto filter which is against the cod

We all tire of his arrogant crap.
No hockey knowledge & only here to stir the pot.
Only here to trade out anyone without a constructive trade offered.

I'm a bit torn on this. If they scouted him and think he has what it takes, I wouldn't be in a rush to waive him if we could waive an alternate 4th liner.

Some guys don't look good in preseason and like they belong in the regular season.

I guess it depends what the team sees and knows too.

If JV starts in Utica, and Grenier can bring a consistent effort, hit on the fore check, I can't see how you send Grenier to Utica. was I thinking the same thing about Grenier a year ago?

When I think of these guys playing for roster spots I think preseason could have some good battles but they seldom play out.

- hillbillydeluxe

Training camp will be interesting. We can spit ball about this stuff for another month until we see what actually happens but until then I see no reason why Grenier couldn't at least make it a more difficult decision.

Benning has talked about Baertschi and Rodin to be around 15 to 20 goals and spoken about Larsen getting 1st PP time. Sure, it's a long shot but it would be one heck of a prediction if so.

To be fair I criticize all trades I find laughable on all threads ... Some flames posters are just as out to lunch as many on here ...everyone overvalues their own

But I will say this thread can be very quick to devalue a player that was just traded to another team

There may be a lot of armchair GMs on here with ridiculous proposals but there are equally as many people on here that think they are smarter than GMs . I don't know which is more annoying.

This is a site to share thoughts. Some are stupid but it doesn't deserve calling out. Nighthawk comes on here like everyone else and says what's on his mind. If his posts bother you ignore it.

I don't believe any of us actually work for the NHL ?

To be fair he was criticizing someone else and referring to their ridiculous trade offers so I just pointed out he should probably look in the mirror before making that statement

Aren't we all less qualified yet smarter armchair GMs ?
