You're so (frank)ing positive it drives me nuts.

But you had a freakout not too long ago about something the canucks didn't do but I can't remember exactly what. I think you are trying to convince yourself that all will be ok. You're in for a hard landing.

Do you honestly believe our team is less competitive than last year?

- CanuckDon

I don't see that the competition for spots is miles different than last year and that we have more depth, which is what I was responding to. I'm not sure if you are asking if I think the team will be more competitive.

It's more or less the same IMO.

Last year we had a lot of new bodies vying for spots and roles and I only see 2 spots up for grabs and most roles pretty well defined.

There will be a competition for who our 8th D is and who our 13th forward is.

I'm not sure that the line up is more competitive than last year.

This year we have Rodin, Grenier, Gaunce, Etem, Virtanen and maybe Zalewski competing for 4 spots.

Last year we had McCann, Vey, Cracknell, Grenier, Kenins competing for 2 spots

This year we have Tryamkin, Larsen, Beiga, Pedan competing for 3 spots.

Last year we had Corrado, Hutton, Beiga, Pedan, Weber, Fedun competing for 2 spots.

If anything I would say last year was more competitive because there were more guys vying for less spots.

As far as depth we are more or less the same as well. Maybe even worse, we have very few guys with much pro experience down on the farm.

- belcherbd

I didn't mean it as a competitive line up as much as a competitive training camp. No single roster spot available is going to be handed out.

I agree. The canucks depth is better than it has been in a long time but it's still not where it needs to be. Many fans are expecting the rookies to improve across the board. No slumping or injuries. Same with guys like Sutter. I have no idea what to expect from him... There’s going to be a few new faces that will need time to adjust to systems and teammates.

Our oldest players who are our best players are another season older. If fans expect that the young players are going to improve then the same logic has to be applied to the aging vets.

My expectations are at an all-time low. I think it's best that way. If they "surprise" like some fans say then I'll be the happiest guy on this board. I might even get me one of those Circle Jerker club jackets everyone seems to be wearing.

Not (frank)ing way we are less competitive than last year. I agree it may not seem better but if we had what he have this year for last year I doubt McCann or JV make the roster. That's more my point. More players to compete for spots makes for a healthy competition. Last year they were gifted roster spots imo.

The Canucks defense has far more depth...just the fact that Sbisa is in a serious fight to crack the 3rd pairing is great, he was in our top 4 for half the season last year Also, Bartowski is gone, even his mother would agree our D is better off. Erickson is a big upgrade on Vrbata and our young forwards will hopefully take another step this year. We should have more balanced scoring and a stronger d. Just because there were more players fighting for less spots doesn't mean jack. Kenins, Bart, Biega, Corrado, these guys aren't legitimate NHL players. Utica has more depth this year as well. Benning and Linden have signed a bunch of quality vets for the farm.

It's never a bad idea to expect nothing and never be disappointed but it sure is boring. I feel training camp will be more competitive and development will be fun to watch but I don't disagree we aren't a lot better. However, we made the playoffs with a worse lineup than we currently project to have.

What is it between you, ASL, and kaptaan? Or have you explained this to me already? You can give him the troll treatment and put him on mute.

Unless you like the banter. It is kind of funny.

I think you are confusing, "I don't think that the canucks have more competition for spots than last year " with " I don't think the canucks will be as competitive as last year"

I know they have some of the same words in them but trust me they are different statements.

Do we have a better defense than last year? Maybe, I'll wait to see how Tryamkin, Larsen do in the NHL before calling them better than Bart.

As far as Sbisa playing in the top 4 last year.... that happened because of injuries to Edler, Hamhuis and Tanev..... What do you think happens this year if those guys or Gudbranson are injured? What we saw from Tryamkin was pretty intriguing but not even I would say that he looked like an upgrade over Sbisa at this point.

I agree those players listed aren't legitimate NHL players but they are legit AHL players something that this team has no more of now, and maybe even less than they did a year ago.

That is the only thing I care about these days. Don't care about wins or losses. Don't care about the playoffs. I want to see this organization develop their talent properly. That's why I want to see the best management team you can have. The canucks will draft talent just hope they can truly develop these kids.

They have done a good job in the past with guys like Burrows, Bieksa, Kesler, twins, Edler, Hansen, etc.

When you draft players and develop properly they seem to be difference makers for your club for a long time. Funny how that works.

I agree that Virtanen was gifted a spot last year but Hutton, Cracknell and McCann all earned their spots last year in competition last year.

I think McCann/Cracknell/Virtanen might still beat out Granlund/Gaunce/Grenier for the last couple of spots as well. Hutton likely beats out Pedan and Biega as well still too.

Let it go. Don't come in swinging. If Marwood or ASL start something then have at it. But the bolded has nothing to do with anything. Lets have some context to hockey. Please.

These are the type of players I can't stand (not cracknell specifically). Fringe NHLers taking up roster spots. Four to six minutes a game on the 4th line.
