Why does everyone seem so sure he will sign with the Rangers? I totally get the allure of NYC and all of that, but there will still be many teams bidding on him, and we have seen many times before guys say theyd like to play in a certain place, but when a team offers an extra mil a year and a longer contract, minds get changed pretty easily.

I know he is from the area and may have said hed like to play out East, but i could see NYR, NYI, BOS, BUF, even NJD and wash (if they clear cap) all having solid offers out there. While i agree with you giving up assets now when he may become a UFA could be a waste, they would also get that whole year to be the only team talking to him to get him to extend and sell him on the team, so it may not be that dumb of an idea.

Both teams had considerable more talent than the Rags. Your defense is laughable absent McDonough and maybe Skjei in time. I laugh at those who suggest Shattenkirk wouldn't help your defense.

Well...it is the Rangers thread, so it would be kind of odd if they were all talking about him signing with Boston or something.

Also: no room for him on the Islanders.

- eichiefs9

Fair enough. Wasnt sure on islanders D situation from an outsiders view. I like it, but also think any chance a team has to add a dman like shattenkirk for nothing but cash other moves could be made. That was the point i was trying to get at with the teams listed.

Also, i know its nyr thread and wasnt trying to be a jabroni, but this isnt the only place where he is rumored to go there. I was more or less asking if there was something he said that i may have missed to allude to it more than anything else.

Your post was terrible. He isn't going to say something like that when he is under contract with another team.

Shattenkirk had been quoted as saying it's always been his dream to play for the Rangers, the team he grew up a fan of.

I think that's where the speculation really stems from, but he said that years ago and things change.

I have always felt that St Louis's attitude would be about Shattenkirk wanting to be a Ranger would be "who cares?"

if they are going to trade him, it'll be for the best deal they can get

Right, but we'd have to deal either Skjei or Buchnevich for Shattenkirk, right? If it's Skjei, how is defense any better in the long run with the risk that Shattenkirk can leave as a free agent? If he leaves, all of a sudden it's just McDonagh and no Skeji or Shattenkirk.

Our offense is lacking any true game changer outside of Nash who had a bad year last year and is a question mark coming into this season. Buchnevich is our best hope for an elite first line forward. so again, dealing him for 1 year of Shattenkirk would be a mistake too and make our offense just as "laughable" as our defense.

Unless you think we can get Shattenkirk without giving up a top prospect?

Yes, players say things like they like playing in certain buildings or in their home town all the time. Idk why you are having a hard time understanding this. Perhaps if i get one of those hero charts that you seem to think are the end all be all to show it you will understand?

Also, rangerdanger gave me what i was looking for, proving you are clearly wrong. thanks!

I will concede that of late it appears you do not need an elite goalie to win the cup. but I will also argue that it sure does help. the rangers went for the past few years, and im sure no one would be complaining about not trading yandle or trading for yandle or even signing Dan Boyle, if the rangers had won the cup. you have to take some risk to win the cup. it didn't work out.

I am in the get shatty camp, mostly because I think it does both in help us now and in the long term. if they can do a trade then sign(hand shake agreement) with shatty then its a win-win.

- richardson30

You may not need an elite goalie to win the Cup. But you do need elite players and Lundqvist still falls into that category. Making the most of the prime years of your elite players just makes sense. Since after he's done, how many elite players will the Rangers have?

Penguins won with elite forwards and good enough D and goaltending. That doesn't mean a team with fewer elite forwards won't need to compensate somewhere in order to win. If the Rangers plan on stepping back for a bit and using up the best years of their best players....they may be stepping back for a lot longer than that.

Gorton has made the team better during the summer without a doubt. And not in the way Slats would've! We're in the playoffs again...

I think the moves Gorton made this year were all great. I think you guys are in the playoffs again next year no doubt. However, i believe the moves, altho the right ones long term, will have the team be worse this year.

I just think losing yandle and brassard and replacing them with holden and MZ makes the team worse now. Obviously skjei is the main replacement for yandle, but i dont know how anyone can think he will be better than yandle was last year year in his first full season.

I think Yandle was so absurdly bad defensively that it may even out what they lost in his offensive game

Eh idk. I watched a good amount of NYR games but not as much as you guys so youd know better than i would, but i never thought he was THAT bad on the dside. He also did get nearly 50 pts and was real good when McD was out. 50 pts isnt very easy to replace.

I do think your forward core got deeper and your PK should be way better. Nash will have a bounce back year. IDK about buch, he looks real small and unable to handle the grind, but well see. The D is a major ? tho. will girardi and stall bounce back, or was last year more of the norm. I like McI and relaly like skjei, but relying on them very heavily early on could be problematic

I think Yandle is worse than advertised defensively, and he's advertised pretty badly.

His shot was worse than I thought. He really doesn't get points shots through.

Fantastic skater and one of the best passers Rangers have had in years.

They are also going to miss Brassard's playmaking ability, but I love that trade overall.
