Gagner signs for $650k
Should of kept - PhillySportsGuy
He is a special player according to Eklund. Tortorella is going to LOVE him......lol |

Renberg was such a special player when healthy. - MBFlyerfan
Renberg was my favorite forever. When I was ten I got his and Hextall's autograph at Nobody Beats the Wiz in Moorestown, ca. 1995/1996. Ah the tender, gilded memory of youth.

I mean, I'd rather have Gagner on his deal than Weise or Gordon on their deals |

deals aside, I would rather have Weise or Gordon.
Either way Gagner, no matter what he is paid, doesn't crack the lineup in a role that is suitable to his skillset.

I predict John Tortorella will see that Sam Gagner gets punted to the AHL by December. |

Not me, Both Weise and Gordon are both better players at their roles than Gagner is at his. Even with the cheap cap hit. I agree with not bringing back Gagner. |

I have to say I find that puzzling. They tried Gagner in the middle six last year and he never really clicked, despite trying hard. His lack of speed was obvious and meant he couldn't get into scoring positions often enough to contribute much scoring 5 on 5. On the PP he didn't stand out, and was just OK in Shootouts. When he went thru waivers unclaimed I don't think anyone was surprised.

I don't think Hexy and Hak saw Gagner as a center, and they wanted better size and speed on the wings. It's the same reason White is gone. |

Gagner's lack of speed is what makes his signing by CBJ so odd to me. Tortorella's teams seem to play very fast and I'm not sure how Gagner fits into that. |

I see Weise as a 4th liner, which are a dime a dozen IMO. Even when Gagner wasn't scoring, he was at least helping to carry play. I wouldn't even mind putting Gagner on the 4th line. I don't understand why teams think 4th lines need to be energy guys with little puck skill. Those are 4-5 minutes each game where they could be winning if they just played more skill.
Seems like NHL teams would rather have their 4th line score 5 goals and allow 10 all season than score 18 and allow 15.
Once the contract is factored in (there is essentially no risk in the Gagner deal), I don't think it's close between Gagner and Weise. |

He's not, though. He's a 3rd liner who can move into the top 6 if required by injuries or form, like Raffl. |

Raffl's versatility is due to his strong possession ability. Weise isn't a strong possession player. He's average-below average.
Look, I may have exaggerated about the Gagner/Weise thing. All things being equal, I think I'd rather have Weise on this current Flyers team. They have a decent amount of strong possession guys and need someone who goes to the net in order to maximize the scoring chances. I just don't like this contract. I would Rather have Gagner if contracts were factored in. |

I think Weise is going to be a solid all around player for the Flyers, and he is going to help make them a better team. He'll make a bigger impact on the team than bringing back Gagner would. For that kind of player, 2.35M is not an issue. I don't have a problem with the 4 year term either. |

Is it safe to say there is not a contract on the team that you have any issues with? |

Given that our 4th was used like a second 3rd, playing 9-10 min at ES, even during the Cousins Era, it's even more important. Good news is with guys like Read, Laughton, Leier, Lyubimov, and whatever other spare pieces we have, our 4th is getting more skilled. I do understand why coaches prefer a 2-way responsible line with some zip and even PK ability on the 4th, as to how it helps the top of the lineup. But it is so true that coaches would rather lose with a reliably terrible mucker line then add in some young rookies on ELCs or cheap skill.
The Untouchables Line last year was arguably one of the worst lines in hockey: by possession, by goals scored, by the eye. They were playing 10-13 min of game time and hurting the team immensely doing it. Oh but they did it reliably. |
