Clearly, your statement just proves you process of thining relies on comparision. Yet, there is a pretty evident irony. You say things that you can't even grasp, especially since you cannot relate at any level to the extreme delicate situation this man and his family had to live through. Such survivors tend to become acheivers in the process of overcoming greif. For this reason, it is not outside of the realm to think that his kids, who will have been brought up by great values, have a great private education and have some public influence due to the success of their father, would be in a good position to acheive in life and to make a difference in this world.
With such statement, you have simply solidified Bobby Ryan's comment. Any human raised with those values in comparision to the values you have just demonstrated, will have made an immediate impact on this world.

Harmful?
How exactly?
They know that they have a parent that cares for them and thinks they can do great things?
Would they be better off if he thought they'd never amount to anything? - mlindsay

Jesus EK..... I was having a few pops on my deck, sliding into a beautiful long weekend and you made me read that..... it was awesome, but man.... I didn't expect to be crying in my beer at 2:30....
Anybody who has been touched closely by that horrible f_cking disease cldnt help but get choked up by that letter.
My 8 year old son and I both lost our best friends in the same year to cancer and later watched my mother-in-law spend her last 6 months alive as she battled that horrible disease....
So, to that, I say "F_CK CANCER".
To see that Bobby had to deal with that on top everything else that he has had to deal with in his life, only makes me respect the guy even more. Living near Ottawa, and despite the fact he a private guy, we get to a lot about the kind of man he is. Obviously, his mother did a fantastic job in instilling him with a fantastic set of morals!
My thoughts and prayers go out to Bobby and his family as they try to move on ....
And now I need another pint and I'm going to listen to Chris Stapelton sing 'Drink a Beer'

Understand their mom is a Ph.D. scientist...not a hockey writer. . They are fantastic kids with a brilliant mom.

I was also tearing up reading it... while knowing that my mother is going through a similar battle. F Cancer indeed.

It is pretty neat to personally know a Athlete at the NHL level. Jake Allen went to my high school. Played on our midget AAA team a few years after myself and his Father Kurt was my gym teacher threw out high school. Great kid! Good local boy who always comes back to his roots in the summer in New Brunswick.
As for Bobby, he is a class act. He's had a rough path in life and has risen above it all.
I can see him having a very strong season in 2016/2017 for the Sens, using his love for his late mother as motivation for a successful campaign. RIP Melody Stevenson.
According to some people, bobby still doesn't have the word intense in his dictionary - DeflatedPucks
Never bought into this. Guys play the game differently. Some have that killer instinct or intense edge, some don't--doesn't mean they can't compete. They just see and play the game differently.
Always seemed kind of easy/lazy to me to say a guy "just doesn't have the intensity."
Now, if he's out there every night dogging it and not giving zero effort, that's a whole other thing.

I've met famous people before, they're usually polite, but rarely are they also WARM. I met Bobby once at an event, and as far as being polite, he was. But he was ALSO very warm and engaging. He shook hands and introduced himself to everyone, "Hi, I'm Bobby" and took his time with them everyone. He genuinely seemed to WANT to make everyone he met smile. It made my day, as I'm sure it made a lot of other people days as well.
