Drafting is all fine but there is no D in the system projected to be helpful.
No highly drafted D in a long time hurts.
Also the timing to move assets for D is not right at this time.

Freddie is a positive move in the right direction.
Idk about the contract he got but its understandable in many ways.
I see Marner being a very good playmaker eventually.
I question team toughness & who can protect AM etc.
Nylander looks promising but idk yet but in the end a solid top 6 prolly.

Other than winning AM the rebuild process looks to be a very long one now the teardown is virtually over. Good thing Babcock is signed longterm it will be needed.

It's not really just the beginning of a rebuild. Just look at the players you mentioned, from Matthews back to Rielly, and you could say Kadri and JVR via the Schenn trade as well, the Leafs have been acquiring top ten picks for some years now.
