You can tell it's July 28th up in this female dog when people are arguing over buyouts and the medical rights of a player/team with regards to Cowen of all (frank)ing people
- RickJames77

For a team looking for cap flexibility in hopes not to have to access LTIR overages this is perfect summertime fodder...don't let the facts get in your way though!

exactly, so if they were informed, then Cowen did nothing wrong. do we know if that was the case or not?
- vermie22

We don't even know the date of the surgery, all I know is it was sometime before june 30th.

If you get bought out are you not paid the full amount of your contract? I thought being bought out only had cap implications.

Do you know the date he had the surgery?
- the_eye

3) but, word is Cowen had surgery after he left TOR on a doctor's recommendation. Prior to that, he had been cleared to play in AHL...

Sometime in May?

I work with contracts for a living so with the right Adobe SW and a little know-how it's a lot easier than you'd think.

It's amazing how stubborn people can be when a little bot of fact gets in the way of their feelings/arguments.

when we see mention of "Robidas Island" in Leaf contracts going forward we'll know Lou's posse has been working hard. Also look for expressions such as "cement boots".

Friedman notes that Cowen had been cleared to play in the American League in February, but opted to have surgery - on a doctor's recommendation, though presumably not a Maple Leafs doctor - on his own after leaving the club. The question of Cowen's health, then, will be left for an arbitrator to determine.

Do you think the leafs (knowing you can't buy out injured players, and the length they went to to keep him from getting injured) would try to buy him out if they knew he had had surgery?
- burn

is a player who is previously cleared to play and never played....that elects to have post season surgery and recovering from said personally elected surgery during buyout time, technically injured according to buyout rules?

Nope. Under 25 rule .....he'll get 1.5 in cold hard cash instead of 4.5. Big bucks on the line for a guy who may never get another NHL contract.

I'm guess that the leafs are trying to buy him out and he's grieving it means no.

If he was cleared to play and healthy, they why did the leafs refuse to play him? because they didn't want to risk aggravating the existing injury. doesn't sound like a healthy athlete to me and sounds a bit dodgy to me.
- vermie22

I would say the Leafs didn't want to risk him getting a new injury and screwing up the buy out.

1. He clearly said he was ready to play.

2. When he was told he wasn't going to play, he went and got surgery. Cowen is surrounded by agents, attorneys and business managers. There is no way in hell this wasn't done in order to get a full payday.

Very suspect on Cowen's part.

He stands to lose $3M of his remaining $4.5M salary

You know what you can do with $3M these days?

Thats what's up for grievance. Leafs say he was healthy enough to play In the ahl before the Season ended.

He had 3 days to dispute being medically cleared to resume to the NHL based on the 2nd opinion of a Dr of his choosing - that was February 26. Doesn't matter when the surgery occurred. If he did, pay up Leafs.

I'm not against Cowen and for the Leafs in the least on this matter - like us all just trying to piece everything together based on the facts that have come out.

Just got out of a meeting and quickly scrolled through a few pages.

Lots of Cowen talk, but I also saw some love for Ariana Grande and some bumhole saying Slap Shot was lame.

Or the agent informed them and their position is that this surgery doesn't fit within the meaning of the CBA regarding buyouts. I.E. the Leaf position is that the surgery wasn't related to an injury he sustained while playing.

I'm hoping that your guess is right ...they resolve it by giving the Leafs the buyout but allowing him to cash in. It's only money ...

5:00PM March 1 - if he challenged the IR clearance by then, he'll get paid. From the sounds of it through interviews, he was disappointed not to get the chance to play...my tune would change too if $3M was on the line (that's 30 years of a $100K salary job for God's sake...HUGE implications for a guy who may never play again). I just don't think the facts are on his side based on what's in the public domain.

I knew HE would write this:
The Canucks would be wise to acquire the Vancouver, B.C. native.

I don't know what bothers me more....that he overuses this phrase, or that the idiot, in this case the blogger, actually believes his suggestion is wise.
